Shopify Theme Review: Focal by Maestrooo [2022]

hey it's klaus here i haven't done a,theme review for shopify for a while and,as there are more and more,os 2.0 online shopping 2.0,themes are coming out i thought i will,do one for you this time so let's dive,right into it,so the theme that i'm looking at this,time is the focal theme by maestro some,of you might know that the warehouse,theme of maestro is one of my favorite,themes in the shopify universe,and so i thought this new theme that,they brought out,might be a good catch to see what they,have done so let's dive in here into the,demo store first and then we go into the,back end,the demo store itself you see here's,coming in three different styles if i'm,not completely wrong it's actually it's,four different styles so basically you,can choose from different color schemes,on the demo or on the theme itself,you see it has a pop-up integrated here,directly not the best way to work with,pop-ups here obviously but depending on,how you integrate your theme you might,get rid of this anyway and might,integrate a pop-up coming from for,instance clavio or any other kind of app,now let's be on the homepage here and,see what we have here so obviously we,have a hello bar notification bar right,up here interesting here they have a,slider in there see this one is actually,quite nicely done saves a lot of space,you can put in some more information,than just one line i think that's that's,very easily done so if you have um for,instance one more than one promotion,there or you want to mix it up with free,shipping notifications something like,that you can do this here so i like that,a lot,i like that the header is very narrow,one thing that i always recommend when i,do store reviews um website audits is,having a very narrow header so you want,to bring the main content high into the,browser window above the fold so that,people do not need to scroll down to see,the main content so that's nicely done,then we have here the navigation in this,color scheme actually quite nice high,contrast white text on black background,so easy to read easy on the eyes so,that's also very well done,simply also,enough space here to put enough menu,items in here my screen resolution is,1920 1080 so you see that might even,work with smaller ones,it seems so that they have a currency,converter in um included already that's,nice,here i have contact field something i,would not recommend but that seemingly,is an option in in their um in their,theme,er search icon um again not best,practice so they have it here that's,something i would change there and,obviously the,annoying login account creation thingy,and then we have the back or the card,here and also with a contrasting color,so that's nicely done so overall i like,the header you have all the main,information in here a couple of things,that i would add would for instance like,a support email address right here and,other things but overall the header,quite easy,now then we have here our slideshow our,hero image usually i do not recomme

MODE Shopify Premium Theme: The Free Shipping Bar Feature

today I'm going to show you how we set,up our free shipping bar in our mode,theme so you'll notice here,um in the car drawer right now I've,added a product and I'm being informed,that if I spend another,15.55 I will get the free shipping,notification,um so underneath theme settings and cart,you're going to see all the information,you're going to need but here you can,see I have added USD and then here I,have 100 dollars,and then this is the 50 cents now don't,put in a dot in order to indicate this,because it will not work so you just,have to just leave it without the dot,and just write it like this so right now,if I spend over a hundred dollars and,fifty cents I will indeed get the free,shipping notification so if I add one,more product to the cart we can see I'm,now eligible for free shipping so as you,can see here I've swapped over to my,country location Finland and it's set to,Euro and in this I'm going to use,Finland as France as my examples I want,to have that if you spend over 200 euro,in Finland you will get the free,shipping and then for France we're going,to say that it has to be 300 Euro now so,it's going to be written a little bit,differently to the USD because we need,to really hone in on the location so,what I mean by that is I need to,actually put in first a country code now,if you don't know what the country codes,are you could Google them or if you,check out our cart drawer guide,um I have a link over to a PDF file,where I just basically writ out,everything for you so if there's a,country you need to find you can just,come in here look for say Finland here,you can see Finland uses Euro and fi is,the country code here so I need to go,back here and I need to put in fi and,all in capitals as well by the way and,then put in Euro and then I said I,wanted to be 200 euro and zero cents,and now I have to do the same for,friends so I'm just gonna,put in a new line for friends,go back over here and look for friends I,can see friends here so FR is the,country code for France so if it Go F4,in Euro and then I need to put in 300,Euro and zero cents,so now once this green bar at the top,loads across and I click on the cart I,should be seeing that I need to add a,yeah here we go so here I can see you,need to add 113 Euro and five cents and,now if I was to go up here to the bar,and switch over to friends,it should mean I have to add another,extra 100 euro if I click here and it,does indeed so I need to add more here,um if it's a case that for other uh,countries in Europe that they are going,to use all the same,uh discount so let's just say for uh,Germany Ireland any other country that,uses Euro and they're going to have the,one discount you could just simply go,here Euro and then just put in the,amount so let's say a 150 euro is the,amount so if I swap over now to say,another country here in the list say,Austria that's just gonna show me that I,don't need to put in as much so oh that,didn't switch over so I click Austria,here,and now if I check m

hey guys is your boy joe back at it,again codingphase.com in this video we,are going to be talking about,how to use javascript in your shopify,themes okay,now this is part of the course shopify,theme developer which is pretty much a,bundle of courses that teach you,everything that you need to know about,shopify okay i've already taught a,couple of the basic stuff inside of the,shopify theme development course now we,have the shopify online store 2.0 which,is basically a continuation of this,course,but with all of the new features and all,of the new ways of creating themes in,2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 okay so pretty,much everything that you're gonna be,seeing in the ecosystem shopify is,inside of this course okay so let's get,started by taking a look at this theme,that we are creating now this theme is,basically like a,child theme or a copy or like a starter,from the dawn theme that was released by,shopify which is open source which,allows us to use their their code and,use what they have already created um,but basically if we look over here this,is what shopify is using okay and this,is the cart.js,and this is what controls the cart,system okay now in here if we take a,look we can notice that they're using,class based uh components right and we,could say these are actually custom,elements now for those of you guys that,have never seen this before uh think,about this this is like react components,but natively okay with the browser okay,this is all part of vanilla javascript,like you don't need a framework to do,this again you can literally go in on,mozilla and check this out okay you,don't have to use webpack you don't have,to use any of that you can just write,your javascript and pretty much define,some custom elements okay,a few years ago i actually went in and,created a course on polymer and we,talked a lot about this uh because you,know in the future or supposedly in the,future uh we were supposed to all be,using,custom elements okay did that happen i,don't know some people use it some,people are too comfortable with react,and viewing angular okay so it's gonna,be hard for for people to take away,their their front-end frameworks even,though the you know the the browser can,already do a lot of the things that we,use frameworks for now why does shopify,decided to go with this route well,actually it's very simple the main,reason is because it just makes your,website way faster okay,now imagine this if you are using,something let's say like react right and,you are using,i don't know,some library out there like some,component library uh like let me show,you guys an example,like this one materialize i see a lot of,people that use materialize shout out to,chris shawn who love material ui okay,but if you're using this type of of,libraries right uh you're downloading,not only this component as a dependency,but then you also have react as a,dependency that you have react dom as a,dependency then you have whatever,dependencies that this material ui needs,
