all right uh,welcome to this talk about three ways to,make wrong code look wronger um,i'm going to to very briefly introduce,myself i think most of you know me by,now i but for the video i'm daniel's,sockwell um you might know me as code,sections from online i,uh in addition to spending most of my,time with raku these days i'm coming,from a javascriptless and rust,background i'm on the raku steering,council the board of the pearl,foundation and,uh before becoming a programmer was a,practicing attorney,um,about you who,this talk is aimed at people who have at,least a little bit of accurate,experience i'm going to be walking,through some raku code without,going through it at a you know totally,101 level but nothing nothing super,complicated,um,okay so what is this talk about well,it's kind of a riff on an old uh blog,post by dole sploosky,where he's,on the theme of making wrong code look,wrong and and he,presents a solution in,uh,uh c,i don't know why the lights just got a,lot brighter but,um,he presents a solution in c,and i'm gonna sort of walk through how,we would do the same thing in raku i'm,then going to present a second way to,address the same,uh,the same thing in in raku,um and then i'm going to present a third,uh raku solution and then we'll we'll,talk a little bit about,well i hope y'all will be able to see,the slides regardless of what the lights,keep doing um and then we're going to,talk about a third way to do it interact,and compare and contrast,so the problem,um that that all of these are going to,be sort of riffing off of like i said,comes from this old blog post,um it's worth a whole read it gives a,lot of uh,additional insights and perspectives um,so there's the link but but the basic,problem is so imagine we're we're,building a web application we want to,accept user input,but we want to avoid cross-site,scripting attacks where the unsanitized,user input is is redisplayed in a way,that could lead to a javascript,injection or something like that so,um,why is this a problem let's let's look,at two sort of non-solutions two ways,that you might naively approach this but,that are are not going to work out well,um,you take a um,what if you html encode all of your user,input as soon as you get it so you know,when you prompt the user for,their name you go ahead and encode it as,html that they give you a string like i,heart raku and you encode that as i am,lt uh,semicolon raku that that's the html uh,encoding,what,i did um,it's going to be a recurring theme since,these slides build on each other so,imagine a three,um,thanks for that the,um so that that's going to,work and have the the username correctly,encoded but then say you want to store,that username in your database um and,you're going to be using it for things,other than displaying on on a web screen,you probably don't want to store,html specific escape sequences in your,database you want to just store the the,input that you got,unencoded so,it doesn't it's not a great practice and,

should NCAA teams be wearing Tech suits,in dual meets now this conversation has,popped up back and forth you know over,the past couple years and recently AKA,last night Arizona State head coach Bob,Bowman put out this tweet and reignited,that conversation now before we get into,it the purpose of this video isn't to,say you're right or wrong for thinking,one way or the other it's to continue to,push this conversation and just bring to,light that this is a conversation that,we need to be having and I don't think,the basis of this debate is about tech,suits I think it's about how do we make,dual meets more exciting in the NCAA how,do we make swimming is a live event or a,live event being watched on the internet,more palatable for Die Hard fans fans,casual fans Etc and help build this,Sport and make it a revenue generating,sport so before we get into it I want to,continue this conversation by allowing,you to go down to the comments section,and tell me whether or not we should or,should not be wearing Tech suits in dual,meets,so a tech suit is a technical racing,suit and if you're not familiar it's a,suit that goes from the knee up to the,hip for men and from the knee up over,the shoulder for women that provides,extra buoyancy improved hydrodynamics,and also a little bit of compression and,just generally makes you swim faster and,you see them in the Olympics that,international team trials at World,Championships at these huge meets and,one place you don't really see them is,in the NCAA and now I say the NCAA,because,the NCAA season isn't just NCAA,championships it isn't just you know,conference championships or the winter,invites it's a lot of dual meets the,majority of it is the regular season the,same is the case for football for,basketball for baseball for all of these,Revenue generating Sports the consistent,theme is they have a solidified strong,Revenue generating regular season with,this big like party at the end of the,year where you get to watch the best of,the best from the regular season compete,right now we just kind of have this Dead,period with little little Peaks and,valleys where we have people swim really,fast try really hard and then we go back,to racing and training Suits now one,point that I want to bring up is when,you decide to race in training suits and,not in a technical racing suit or a tech,suit the message that you're sending to,the viewer is I don't care enough about,this or this doesn't matter enough to my,team my the you know NCAA as a whole for,me to perform at my absolute best,because when you put on that Tech suit,you're telling yourself I'm giving this,my all to to some extent maybe you don't,taper maybe you don't shave but what,you're doing is telling the viewer I'm,about to ball out I'm going to get in,this pool and I'm gonna give it my all,because I want you to watch I want you,to have a good time watching because,we're in the entertainment industry you,have to realize that dual meets if we,want them to be palatable
