so far on this channel we've continued,to go deeper and deeper into shopify,theme development but today i want to,zoom out and talk more broadly about the,need for theme development to begin with,if you're new here i'm chris and i,currently specialize as a front-end web,developer for the shopify platform i.e i,do shopify theme development but if,you've clicked on this video i'm going,to take a guess and say that you don't,actually need my services let me explain,so given that i've built a bit of a,reputation for this kind of work i get a,range of people reach out to me some of,which are just starting out in,e-commerce and to virtually all of these,people i tell them to start with a,pre-built theme and focus on customizing,their theme later,why because as a new store owner your,primary goal should be on sales and,marketing not on getting your theme,perfectly customized i'll be honest a,custom site for me is typically going to,come with a five figure price tag and if,you don't have a ton of traffic on the,site yet that budget is probably better,spent on generating traffic instead,pre-built themes whether free or paid,will do the trick for the majority of,sellers and with premium themes starting,at a price tag of just around 220 usd,it's an easy investment to justify that,is until you reach a certain level,that level is typically when you start,to turn over more than a million dollars,in revenue at this point you have a real,business and with around 40 profit,margin you're making around 400k which,you can start to split up between,marketing and website improvements,people often ask me do i build websites,to which i answer no i customize,existing ones regardless of whether,you're just starting out or a few years,into your business,very rarely is it the case that i as a,developer need to create a brand new,theme for a client,most e-commerce sites have similar,features almost every product page has a,set of product images a product title,description price product form,and the add to cart button so there's no,need to reinvent the wheel but with a,bit of theme development we can add,extra features to the product page make,unlimited changes to the styling of this,page and this is where theme development,comes in,while the theme might come with some,customization options the only way to,achieve full control is enlisting the,help of someone who understands,front-end web development on the shopify,platform so with this in mind let me,directly answer the question in the,title of this video,the first decision you need to make is,free or paid theme as i mentioned,earlier this is going to be a question,you need to answer no matter whether you,plan to create a custom site or not as,it's almost always more cost efficient,to start with a pre-built theme and this,decision i would recommend you make,based purely on your budget if you can,afford the two to three hundred dollars,required to buy a premium theme then i,definitely recommend you do it,at the time of record

all right guys so in this video i'm,going to be showing you how you can go,ahead and,customize your debut theme within,shopify so debut theme,is the theme that all shopify stores,start out with,by default when you go ahead and start a,shopify store and if you haven't already,opened your shopify store yet you can,start your 14 day free trial by clicking,the first link in the description,so i figured i'd make this video because,debut theme,is one of the most commonly used themes,because it's the one that all stores,start out with and the view theme,actually looks,really good so right here we can see,that this is what debut theme looks like,when it's first installed with,absolutely nothing filled out,so we can see that we have where our,logo should be,we have a big header right here with,some text we have an image here,we have three images with text below,here we have,a uh empty collection and we have,another,um header type image right here another,wallpaper image,we have some testimonials and we have,three images down here,and then we have the footer so,right now we have a nice little template,but it's blank,so if you're looking to go ahead and,fill out,your um store using debut theme,the first thing you're going to want to,make sure you have is,a few key things so i'm going to bring,up a notepad and just make sure,because before you go ahead and start,the design process you're going to need,a couple things so the first one is,going to be a logo,so i assume you already have a logo at,this point if you're ready to start your,store design but if not,then make sure you get a logo first,because everything else is going to be,based around the logo,and then we're going to have a color,scheme selected,and normally this color scheme is going,to,be derived from colors from your logo,and typically,you're going to use one to two colors,to base your entire store around and,like i said these colors will be derived,from the logo and the next thing we're,going to need,is a couple wallpaper photos,so we can see we're going to need some,photos to go ahead and put back here in,this header,we need some photos to put back here and,this header as well,so if you have any large photos related,to your business,go ahead and upload them to your,computer or,put them all in one folder so we can go,ahead and,use them as backgrounds here and if you,don't you can use,different sites such as pixabay,to find free stock images that you can,go ahead and use,so let's just type in something like,fishing,so if you had a store related to fishing,you could go ahead and just,look for different stock photos here,or maybe you have something related to,yoga,or fitness you can type in a lot,of different niches depending on what,your store is based around,and you can use some of these wallpapers,to go ahead and put back here,now obviously i do think it's better if,you have your own,custom photos but uh you know not,everyone's gonna have that starting out,so if you don't you can go ahead and us

all right everyone christian here today,i'm going to show you how to keep your,theme up to date super super important,let's get started,so shopify recently released os 2.0 and,with all of that all the themes and the,theme store have been updated to us i'd,say 99 of them have been updated uh,which means that you should definitely,update your theme right now,now,essentially now is the perfect time for,you to update your theme if you haven't,uh there are two ways in which you can,do this um first we're going to do the,old way,it's a little bit more cumbersome,since,actually maybe a few weeks ago a few,months ago they've added the ability to,do this a lot easier but i'm still going,to show you some of some of the other,ways so,shopify and other theme designers,frequently release updated versions of,their themes that they publish on the,theme store so,these updated versions usually include,bug fixes,and a lot of times some new features too,so it's important for you to keep them,up to date on a regular basis what i,would probably recommend is that you,check it,once a month or once every two months,and you just go through this process,make sure that you're,up to date with everything,and just kind of move on,again,bug fixes and new features and then just,the ability to,potentially load your website faster or,all things that you want and your,customers want as well so this is,something that i haven't seen a lot of,people uh necessarily talk about but,it's super important to add to your uh,sort of things that you should do a,maintenance maintenance wise right for,your shopify store because it doesn't,happen automatically so step number one,is to check what theme you're actually,using so do that very simply we just go,to online store and then right here,under themes,it will show you the live theme that,you're using here at the very top so,right now we have venture and then we,have the,version 9.4.1,right here and then if you scroll down a,little bit you'll see your theme library,so these are the other themes that,you've added to your store some of them,could be team throughout,theme trials,or just some older,themes,in there so now we can see that we have,venture and that's the latest version,that we have installed right here now,step number two again this is the sort,of the old way of doing this uh it would,be to go to the theme store and actually,find your theme so we're just gonna do,that really quickly just to kind of show,you what we do in here so we're going to,look for venture,click on that,and then we're going to click on venture,as you can see like venture is not an os,2.0 site let me go back so you can see,it doesn't have the tag for the os 2.0,here so i would recommend not to keep,venture and move on to something a,little bit better but for the purpose of,this tutorial we're going to do this and,then what we want to do here is log in,and then let me grab this real quick,copy,paste,okay so now that you're logged in then,uh this depending on the act

today i'm going to show you the easiest,way to add your product inventory uh or,your stock level uh onto the product,page on dawn and on other modern shopify,things this is really easy to do if your,product does not have variance like,color or like size,unfortunately it gets pretty complicated,if your product does have variants so i,won't be covering that in today's video,but if that's actually what you're,looking for just leave a comment below,and i'll make that video for you and,like i said this is a tutorial using,dawn which is shopify's new default,theme on shopify online store 2.0 but,you can do the same thing on any theme,that has the custom liquid code block,available on the product page so as you,can see here i am on my product page on,my development store,and i have this line right under the,price that says we have six items,remaining this is a product without any,variance so this is really easy to do,first we're going to add a block,and that block type is going to be,custom liquid okay so this is,a block where you can add custom code,now i'm just going to write test,so that it shows up,here it is at the bottom test,and i'm just going to drag it up,to where i want it to be so like right,under the price,there it is,and i'll just hide my other block right,now,because i'm just going to show you step,by step how to do this,first thing i'm going to do is write,stock or something like that and then,i'm going to add these curly braces like,this,and we're going to write product,dot,variance,dot first,dot inventory,quantity,okay with an underscore,and that will show up our inventory,quantity great so the next thing you,might want to do is add text,to other parts so if you want to put it,in a sentence like mine was,then i would,write something like we have,and then this,code and then items remaining at the end,here,and we can also wrap this in a paragraph,so that it's,neat you know,don't forget the closing tag,all right this is just normal html right,paragraph tags now another thing you,might want to do is,only show it when you're low in stock,on a particular product right,so we can add an if statement,that says,if you have less than five products,then show this otherwise do nothing,so let's do this let's open,a logic block in liquid okay and we're,going to write if,and then here is where we write the,condition,okay and we're going to write,and if,once again in a logic block and if,after,the code that we want to show up,okay,so,and what is our condition the condition,is that this number that we're,outputting,is less than 5 so you can literally,copy this,paste it here,and we're going to write,less than,5,product variance,first inventory quantity is less than 5,show this so as you can see it's,disappeared from here,because we have more than 5. if i had,less than 10,it would reappear,there you go so that's all guys it is,pretty simple,i'll also add this code in the video,description and like i said if you have,a product with variants this won't work,
