good afternoon to those of you just,joining us,at the catwalk here we now have alan,o'neill up next,alan has supported iconic brands like,ann summers fennec,harrods primark and selfridges alan will,also add his thoughts on sustainability,and discuss some other significant,retail challenges please welcome alan to,the stage,afternoon good afternoon,guys can we just get the slides working,okay thank you there we go,okay good afternoon well you know i for,years i've been trying to find a way to,get on the catwalk,and here i am here i am hey,thank you thank you thank you so i am a,change management consultant and for,many many years i've been working all,across industry but particularly in the,retail sector so in that time i've,worked from food to fashion luxury to,math market multiple site retail to big,box retail and,duty free as well,and as a change management consultant,the one thing that i'm most impressed,with is the,way that retailers cope with the amount,of change coming their way change has,been a rad just a reality for the world,of retail for all of your lives but to,be faced with so much change and how you,cope with it more than any other sector,i would suggest is really quite,impressive but of course the world is,constantly changing even before covid we,had so much change going on in the world,driven by economic changes fluctuations,in currency recessions and downturns and,growth we also had sociological changes,we had technological changes and so on,but of course covert being the big one,covert being the major driver that now,there's all these changes coming out,it's just growing and growing the rate,of change the speed of change the volume,of change is growing in complexity and,coping with that challenging change is a,challenge for all of us,but of course kova did bring some,significant,changes in this in its own right and the,big one of course being sustainability,and as a follow-on from previous,speakers and the sustainability message,and of course the big strong theme here,at this event sustainability is,something that is really really,important to all of us and we cannot,ignore it it is facing us it's coming,down the tracks like a like an express,train and each and every one of us has,to embrace it in our own way this is,if you look at particularly the previous,speakers talked about the gen z's and,how they are changing well of course and,they make up 30 odd percent of the,global population and they are our,shoppers of tomorrow you know for 30,years as a consultant working with,retailers this has always been the holy,grail for retailers how do we get the,younger audience and here it is no,different but of course every generation,the younger audience is different so,what's new i think,but there are some specific realities,with the gen z's and i want to show you,some interesting paradox actually,between all this that we're hearing,about sustainability and probably,realities on the ground,some of you may have seen the,documentary on you

according to a recent children's,commissioner report we have one in four,children that's 1.7 million children who,are now regularly absent from school,so what does this look like in five or,ten years time and you know we also have,as far as i can see a,government who are you know burying,their heads in the sand about this you,know this is an absolute it's a national,emergency actually and it's one that is,going to have such huge costs and,consequences,hello and welcome back to the brendan,o'neill show with me brendan o'neill and,my special guests this week liz cole and,molly kingsley welcome to the show liz,and molly thank you thank you brandon,so you are the authors of a,really critical and essential new book,called the children's inquiry the,subtitle is how the state and society,failed the young during the covid 19,pandemic,now there's a lot to unpick with this,book in terms of the impact the school,closures had the impact of masks in,classrooms the lack of discussion around,these issues,all sorts of ways in which the lockdown,moment really impacted negatively on,children's lives so i want to get into,all of that stuff but just to kick us,off and just to give our listeners a,sense of what this book is about molly,why don't you outline the general theme,of the book and why you guys felt it was,important to write this yeah of course i,mean i think if you had to distill um it,down into one theme it would really be,that,the way we have,treated children you know whether,deliberately or whether by default over,the last two years has,we feel broken the social contract that,adults um you know and and and have to,children and,what we have done and i think in,something we and others say in the book,goes,far beyond anything we expected to see,in our lifetime,we think we you know the evidence as i'm,sure will come on to now speaks for,itself in terms of the detriment we've,caused those children but really,on some higher level we've,inverted you know natural justice and,morality when it comes to an adult's,duty to protect its child,so liz what was the key thing for you,when the lockdown started when you,started thinking this is going to be bad,for kids what was the turning point for,you because obviously if we go back to,march,2020 or even slightly earlier than that,we have this new virus it's not,particularly well understood lots of,people felt very scared and didn't know,what was going on,lots of us were shocked that we went,into lockdown at all that was a very,unusual historical moment,but for you what was the moment where,you thought okay,not only are we living in this era of a,new virus and a new response to viruses,but this is going to be particularly bad,for children was there a moment where,you thought we're doing the wrong thing,here yeah there wasn't it was twofold,really so it was something that came you,know from within my own my own family,and my own life but also what i was,seeing um outside of that so,you know i could see my my children who,w

stop guessing where your shopify,fulfillments are for your customers,hi my name is andy o'neill in this video,i'm going to show you,how to track your shopify shipments and,know exactly where they are before you,get that nasty email from your customers,saying hey,where's my box it's supposed to be here,three days ago this dashboard will,eliminate the need to click around,looking at,updates in your shopify store for,information about packages,and actually it has more information,about those packages than your shopify,store will provide,if you're interested in using this,shipment tracking dashboard use the link,below and contact me,and let's get you set up right away so,i'm logged into my dashboard and you can,see immediately the information,available i can see my active,fulfillments from my shopify store,based on the carrier so i have usps has,18,ups 16 fedex has two i can immediately,see what carriers are active,as i scroll down on the page i can,quickly see the different statuses for,packages and i can see where,everything's at so i have one that's,accepted one is confirmed and 26 that,are currently,in transit to customers now if you look,at this second row this is kind of the,problem row,you have delivery attempt exception i,have eight in the unknown status which,means the shipment,encountered some unforeseen event on the,way to its destination,we have four late deliveries this is,actually flagged by the dashboard it is,not a,carrier status what happens is when a,new delivery is set up we get the,estimated,uh delivery date and when that when the,delivery is still,outstanding past that delivery date it,shows up here in the late deliveries,we have shipments that are stuck which,means they haven't had a status update,for seven or more days,since since the fulfillment was created,and then we had delayed transit which,means the shipment stat,status has been in transit for seven or,more days without an update,it's just out there somewhere it's on,its way but it's stuck somewhere,so let's look a little bit further down,on the page on our dashboard i have,delayed,selected right here and you can see we,have delayed transit we have two,fulfillments that are marked as delayed,and these are the details for those two,shipments if i go over here and click,the fulfillment history,this is the full information for this,particular fulfillment so you can see,the fulfillment details here,uh the shopify fulfillment id the,fulfillment that,when the fulfillment was created when it,was last updated,we get the carrier name the status the,status is in transit it was updated,seven days ago,status description tracking number you,can actually click the link to go to the,actual tracking page,we have the customer information and we,can click to view the store,order as we scroll down on this detail,view we get a,step-by-step real-time update of,every update we get from the carrier for,this package now you see the first one,came from the shopify store that is when,the original

hello and welcome to another edition of,the e-commerce odyssey podcast i'm here,with sean o'neill from speedsense and,we're going to talk about why it's so,hard for e-commerce brands to run a fast,website,so neil sean sorry my first question to,you is why is website speed important,hey trevor thanks uh for having me,website speed is important for,a lot of different reasons um,let's let's slice it into we'll say,three or four categories uh one is like,the on-site,uh,interaction of the user so you know ux,uh bounce rate conversion rate,everything around the user and the,customer on your site,the second i guess would be like the,seo facet,where,you know google has been pre very,straightforward of late that a faster,website is going to contribute better to,your seo rank so the core web vitals,metrics,we can talk a lot more about that,influence sites site rank search rank um,another,big contributing factor i guess to why i,feel like site speed is important is the,carbon output of,the servers that are powering the uh the,site the network,uh you know there's a there's a carbon,impact of running a website in general,uh and so one of our one of our values,is the the triple bottom line planetary,side of things,uh and then finally if you're you know,if you're running ads or not finally,there's many aspects and i could keep,going on this for a while but,return on ad spend is a big one so if,you've got uh you know would you rather,send a million dollars worth of ad,traffic to a site that loads in five,seconds or a site that loads and won,i think the uh the bounce rate math is,pretty straightforward,uh and very convincing that you'd much,rather have a quicker experience for,for that roas to being higher,okay so tons of data there how does a,company know if that side speed isn't,important for them or they have a,problem,first how do they get a problem and how,do they measure that problem,yeah okay well there's uh there's a lot,of ways to measure,web performance um,and luckily over the last couple of,years maybe uh eighteen two two months,two sorry two years eighteen months to,two years,google has done a good job of,aggregating,they've built a database uh that,basically,aggregates all the page views on all the,sites across the world as you're,clicking through in chrome,and reports that back to google,and they can,highlight this data,in your search console,uh in pagespeed insights scan,and they use this to influence search,rank like i just mentioned second ago so,this is a publicly available data set um,the easiest way to determine if you have,a site speed issue though to answer that,question in short is type,what is my website speed into google and,find the first couple of hits and,pop your home page in there,and then run a scan,the challenging part there is you've,only scanned your home page and if,you're a brand with,thousands or tens of thousands of urls,because you've got a lot of catalogs and,products and,articles and you know everything else,then you've on

yeah my talk is about how Shopify scales,rails,so first up just what is Shopify I,already had someone confuse us forever,Spotify so we're not Spotify we're,Shopify so we do hosted online,e-commerce we make it really easy for,just about anyone to set up an online,store and get started with that so I,grabbed a couple pictures of our office,so we're really trying to to make it,we're based up in Ottawa Canada so we've,made our office like really fun like,pulled a lot of really interesting,things from different offices in Silicon,Valley and it's a really amazing really,cool place to work so I like to share,that with everyone because it's a really,cool place even though we're up in,Canada and it's like really cold all the,time this this kind of makes it,worthwhile anyways like into into the,talk so I'd like just share like kind of,our stack what we run on so we're,running Ruby 193 patch level 327 rails,3-2 we just like made the big bump from,rails 3 to rails 3 to Monday so that was,pretty crazy we use a pro Kona flavor of,MySQL 55 so proponent builds of MySQL,that we use they had a lot of,instrumentation and performance patches,so we use that and then we're running on,unicorn memcache and we have Redis in,the stack so that's kind of the main,moving parts to Shopify so it kind of,looks like this,you know nginx and unicorn in front of,rails and Ruby holding everything up we,have 33 app servers eleven hundred and,seventy-two unicorn workers,five job servers and 307 job workers so,lots of stuff processing lots of stuff,happening at once which is pretty cool,so this is kind of what a little piece,of the cluster looks like we have,firewall load balancer we have our App,servers which are then replicated across,we have search and Redis job servers,pretty standard set up and we can scale,all these pieces horizontally which is,pretty great just an idea of the amount,of code in the Shopify project itself so,we have a bunch of like projects around,Shopify itself so these stats are just,for the Shopify core product itself so,55,000 lines of application code 80,lounge lines of test code 211,controllers 468 models so there's a lot,of code in there and there's a lot of,stuff going on lots of Ruby so what's,our current scale like what kind of how,much are we doing and what does that,look like so last year we processed,nine point nine million orders on behalf,of our merchants and this works out to,be an order every 3.2 seconds so that,was pretty amazing last year on cyber,monday we process 2008 sales per minute,so cyber monday is traditionally our,busiest time of year so we were doing,2008 sales per minute which is pretty,crazy one really amazing thing about,this is in about a month or two this is,like our regular transaction rate and,next year it'll be double so it's really,amazing just like how fast things are,growing and how fast we're needing the,scale and deal with this stuff so we've,run out about 50,000 requests per minute,on a regular day and we keep it pretty,s
