hi my name is lauren and i'm a software,engineer here at sunrise integration in,today's video we're going to talk about,updating your shopify theme and how it,might be a little more complicated than,you'd think especially if you've already,updated or edited any code but not to,worry in today's video we're going to go,through two ways you can update your,shopify theme without losing any of your,customizations,if you haven't edited any code you will,actually find that shopify lets you know,when there's an update for your theme,there's a drop down where you can see,your current theme and view release,notes to see what bugs are being fixed,and what new features are coming and,then you can just say add theme to,library and it'll create a copy of your,new theme and merge over your,customizations,however if you have edited any of your,code that drop down will actually,disappear,and this is what makes it a little bit,trickier to even know if your theme has,an update ready for you to do that you,will have to go straight to the shopify,theme store and look at your theme to,see the release notes and know if a new,theme is out and if you should copy and,download it,you can use shopify's code editor to,find the differences between your,current theme and the theme update,these little dots on the side indicate,that a file has been changed,and you'll want to look at your,sections.liquid files specifically to,find what customizations need to be,brought over to the theme update,shopify also offers a drop down so you,can see older versions and this is a,good tool to use to find the changes in,your code,but you still have to go through and,inspect to really find what changed so,this could be difficult if you've made,lots of big changes to many lines of,code,if you've made changes to multiple files,and lots of lines of code then you can,use github integration with shopify to,be able to compare to the updated theme,and your current theme and merge all of,those changes together this is the,safest way to ensure that you're not,going to break your live site or any of,your customizations,the shopify github integration is such a,powerful tool for version control and,being able to see a backlog of all of,your commits and this is definitely the,solution i would recommend for your,customized shopify theme and trying to,update it,i hope today's video gave you a better,idea of how to update your shopify theme,and manage your customizations and if,you still need help our ecommerce,experts and developers here at sunrise,integration are ready to help,don't forget to hit subscribe for more,ecommerce solutions coming soon

and the this session for the next uh 25,minutes or so we'll be talking about the,state of Shopify theme development so,looking at different workflows which are,available for theme developers uh recent,features which have been released for,themes and our vision as well for the,future,so just just a quick introduction on,myself my name is Liam I'm a developer,Advocate at Shopify I've been with,Shopify for about seven years now so in,that time I've been creating a lot of,content for developers looking to learn,how to build on top of Shopify I've been,creating a lot of YouTube videos blog,posts and of course being able to be,here this is my first time visiting,Australia so it's extremely exciting for,me and yeah,it's yeah amazing connecting with our,developer community so yeah over the,next two days please do grab me for a,chat would love to to connect,so for this session this is going to be,the plan for our journey first we're,going to look at where we are right now,then we're going to look at where we are,going and finally we're going to look at,how we will get there and then we should,have some time for a q a towards the end,so to answer the question where are we,right now we need to take a slight step,back into the past back to Summer of,2021 and Shopify unite which was a,milestone event for team developers we,had the launch of online store 2.0 which,enabled sections on all pages we had,meta Fields natively launched for,themes which allowed us to have much,more flexibility and personalization on,different pages we saw the relationship,of apps and themes become much more,closely combined with Team app,extensions we had of course our vision,for custom storefronts for hydrogen and,last but not least we also had the,reopening of the theme store after the,Hiatus for a while,and in the months since then we've been,able to progressively enhance many of,these features so we've,improved with the limitations that we,had on sections and blocks by making,more sections more blocks available on,pages we have more Dynamic sections,available on more pages for enhancing,meta fields we also made the developer,experience of working with Team app,extensions much much better as well so,all this to say is themes are much more,powerful more adaptable and more,valuable to Merchants than ever before,so just to look more generally at the,ecosystem in general we see you know,quite strong and steady growth we're,seeing millions of merchants are looking,to improve their store looking to,customize their online experience and,their buying experience for their,customers we firmly believe there's a,great opportunity here for developers,looking to enter this space,if we look across to the App Store in,particular last year we saw that 400,million was paid out to our app,developers just increase of over 80,percent from the previous year and of,course we reduced our Revenue share so,Merchants who earn up to their first,million dollars don't need to pay,Shopify any Revenue share and

so one of the um bigger issues with,shopify is that you have thousands of,different themes being created,and so theme developers often have,different aims when creating themes,some have seo in mind and performance in,mind and then some have design and look,in mind and,you don't know often whether things have,been rushed or well thought through and,so,one flaw is that you occasionally have,uh key elements missing for,themes so,um,h1s h2s,are often sort of,placed in the wrong order and there,might be multiple h1s,on product pages or category pages,they might have h1 missing for page,titles which is probably the most common,issue is h2 replaced instead,and this can like i said either be for,for design reasons um or it can just be,a lack of knowledge and seo,um area and um i guess a,i don't know if laziness would be the,right word but um a lack of care so,one of the things which uh you need to,do if this is the case is to,look going to go into your theme code,and make some edits so you can revert as,the h1 is in place and you've got h2s,on the page if required so your h2 would,typically be required if you've got,subheadings um and your h1 is always,required,for,seo and you only want one h1 um,for,this scenario i've deliberately changed,the product uh title to a h2 um and i,want to show you how you can revert it,so just quickly to find out how if,you've got this issue um there's there's,a few different ways of doing it you can,use tools like ahrefs,screaming frog semrush and they'll be,able to identify in bulk whether you've,got multiple h1 no h1 multiple h2s and,just to do it uh i guess for individual,pages um,you can go view page source,and you can do a command f search and,you can type in either h1,oh because i've changed it,so i said okay this is that makes sense,because i was wondering why it wasn't,there so i changed it to a h2 so this is,how you'd be able to identify so there's,no clear h1 these wouldn't be marked as,h1 um there's no clear h1 on the page,instead if we do a h2 search you'll be,able to see,that the you go go to page title,um,product single title,h2 class here so that should be a h1,um,the other way of doing it is obviously,doing a title search,but it can be different depending on,each page,um and there's 85 of them so you could,be searching for a while a slightly,faster way of doing it is also using,something like seo minion,um this will give you,loads of different information about the,on-page elements for for your seo um and,you'll be able to see and identify here,that there is no h1,um,it's h2s and h3s,so,the first thing we need to do is go back,into the um,theme code so obviously we go into,themes,go into actions go edit code,and then um,you'll need to head into,your product template so not your,product sorry,your product section for that template,so don't head into your product template,um you want to head into the section,area,and then you want to find whatever,page,it relates to so at the moment we're on,the product page i

hey this is Kellis landrum from true,north social we are a digital marketing,agency based in Los Angeles and we are,also Shopify experts we work on quite a,few stores with different clients and I,am going to talk to you a little bit,today about our process for creating new,stores from templates now process is,very important to us and in fact when we,talked to potential new clients people,call us up all the time they say hey I,want to start a store I need some help,with it what can you do for me and you,know they're generally talking to a lot,of different people that might be able,to help them out with doing this why,should they work with us well a big part,of the reason that clients like working,with us is because we can we can help,them set up a store from a template very,quickly mostly because we have a really,great very well-established process for,doing this now that's not to say you,can't shot set up Shopify yourself there,are really great instructions and,tutorials for doing this on their,website but we set up several stores,month at minimum so we really have this,down we have a pretty good team of,people that do this and we are very,organized in the way that we go about,doing it so I'm going to walk you,through our organizational process so,our organizational process for setting,up Shopify starts in our project,management tool which is called asana,right asana allows you to create all,sorts of different tasks for different,things and we have created a default,template set up project for setting up,Shopify templates so whenever we need to,set up a new store we take this template,we click on it and say I'm sorry we,click on this,create a new project right I don't,actually need to create a new project,because this is just our example but it,will duplicate this and then whatever,your store name is we'll change it to,your store name and we'll have a new,project set up right and inside of this,template setup project we have lots of,different tasks involved in your store,setup now there's three main sets of,tasks or three main phases to setting up,a Shopify store the first is client,onboarding or pre-production as we like,to call it in-house,the second is setting up the store admin,and the last is our pre-launch checklist,now these are distinct phases we try and,separate them they generally fit into,one and then the other and then the last,before we're ready to set up the store,so let's let's roll through a few of,these I'm not gonna get into too much,depth about any one of them but this,should give you a pretty good idea of,what is involved in setting up a Shopify,store so the first phase I mentioned,client onboarding we do a kickoff call,right we talked to you about we have a,required info dock we talked to you,about what the needs are for your,template is if you know you want to set,up a store with the template you're not,sure which one we'll go through and a,little bit of detail with you what what,kind of products do you have what do you,want

hey everyone jan here codingwithyan.com,so today we have the first episode of,our sell your own theme series and all,of you have been asking tons of great,questions so please keep doing so this,project can only be as good as the,community is and you guys are amazing so,appreciate everyone watching and now,it's time for some answers so let's dive,right in,all right liam then thanks so much for,taking the time today as you know we're,here to answer some of the most burning,questions that people have,are you feeling good about it as well,i'm feeling great jan thanks for having,me here um,obviously a huge fan of the channel and,uh yeah any opportunity i can have to to,share the good word of the shopify theme,store um is is my absolute pleasure um,yeah then maybe as an entry point to our,conversation one of the most burning,topics or one of the most requested,topics was like what is the best way to,create a theme which kind of ties into,two subcategories the concept then the,actual development like workflows tools,and everything,so why don't we talk about the concept,first and,what is the thing or what can we give,people on the way in order to come up,with an amazing concept should we talk,about that,yeah i think that's a great place to,start,so i think the the first thing to really,think about is to really dive into how,merchants and how buyers will interact,with a theme,and and also consider how it's different,to design for a marketplace versus,designing for an individual client,so with an individual client you're very,commonly going to be requesting or being,asked for specific settings whereas in,theme store,these settings are,a little bit more generic um they're not,requested specifically by any merchants,um so merchants may be encountering uh,these features and functionality for the,first time um so i'd really you know,before even writing a line of code um,you know think about the the buyer,journey think about the merchant journey,and how,you know all of these people will,interact with the theme with the online,store editor,and you know think about know you're not,really designing just a storefront,for a buyer to,pick a product and take it to the cart,and check out you're also,essentially designing a ui that,merchants will be using to,bring their store to life,and and ideally with the the minimal,amount of friction possible,okay yeah i think that's a very good,point because as you know many merchants,don't have a strong technical background,then the settings have to be very,straightforward i mean this all ties to,usability i think that's what we are,trying to trying to get across here,um yeah so would you have any tips or,maybe how could someone approach that,would you recommend maybe using tools,like or like design tools to come up,with the visual concept first or would,you just be diving head first and,writing lines of code how would you,approach that yeah so i think there's a,few different methods um but i would,definitely advise,um investing

hi everyone in this tutorial we're going,to download a custom fun to our shopify,team it doesn't matter if you have done,or the old teams it's going to work the,same way,so you can download the font any font,for free from any of the lists that i,have in my website but i do want to show,you how to have a free font so we're,going to go to the font,and in the font here you have to make,sure you check this one free for,personal use it means you can't use it,for commercial,so you can choose whatever,font you want so for me i'm just going,to do 100 then,and then in a year you have more options,and make sure you click hundred percent,free so you can have a commercial use of,your fund and then you click submit,and example um we'll try this love,and,we're gonna,download this file and it's gonna have,ttf file or otf format and if you like,this font please let the author know and,donate so they keep creating new fonts,so i have this log,font,and then open it up so we have to,extract this one from the zip file so,we're going to go downloads and then,right click on the file and make sure,you extract all so for it to expose the,ttf file so we go to our cloud convert,so in here we're going to choose ttf so,you can do otf or wolf whatever you want,then you'll have to choose the,woff too i do recommend you guys to,convert your files to,woff too since it's a smaller file so it,makes your website performance better it,doesn't slow down your website,so in here i'm just gonna select file,and i'm gonna use this ttf and then,click open,and then click convert,and then we'll just have to wait for it,to,finish and then click download,now it becomes a log dot,woff2 file now we have the right font,format so we're just going to go to our,sharing by admin store,and in here you click online store and,teams and,i'm just gonna edit the dawn team that i,just downloaded 18 minutes ago,and click actions and then edit code,i'm just going to expand my uh screen,so we're going to open our asset folder,and add a new asset and i'm going to,choose a file i'm not going to have the,ttf file we're looking for the w o f f,ii file so we're just gonna download,this one so click that and then click,open,and then upload asset,now we should see our file right here,next thing we're going to do is to go to,our team.liquid,which is under the layout folder,and we're going to open our website and,then copy the,code format i have in here so,click to copy and,we're gonna go here,um where the style tag is so you can do,it any part of,head of your team.liquid so make sure,you're not below this um closing,head tag,so it's anywhere in here as long as you,have that style and in the end style so,you can create your own so you can have,um,have a style in here if you don't have,them,and then in it with the end style,and then we can put our code right here,and i'm just going to highlight it and,shift tab to format the font family name,is whatever you want it to be so for me,i'm gonna have it custom font so this

hi,i'm erin merch from 2h media in this,video we're going to take a look at how,to add an image banner section,in shopify's dawn theme now this section,is fantastic for adding hero sections,or breaking up your web page so you,definitely want to master the ins and,outs of customizing this section,from the shopify customizer click add,section in the left-hand navigation,and then click image banner next click,the select image button in the top right,hand corner of the screen,once you've chosen an image click the,select button in the bottom right hand,corner of the screen,if you'd like to display two images side,by side click the select image button,under the second image heading once,again select an image that you've,previously uploaded or upload a new,image from your computer,after choosing an image click the select,button,the next setting that you get to,customize is the desktop text position,you can display your text box at the top,center or bottom of the section,in this example we're just going to,leave it centered and move on,under the color scheme header you can,use the drop down to select a background,color for your text box,you can adjust the available colors by,clicking theme settings,colors but be careful any changes you,make in the theme settings menu,will be applied across your entire,online store not just in this specific,section,the next setting to adjust is the stack,images on mobile checkbox,if you leave this selected your images,will appear vertically in mobile rather,than side by side,if you uncheck this setting your images,will appear side by side on mobile just,like they do on desktop,to preview both options select the,mobile preview,at the top right hand corner of the,screen continuing to go through the,available options,if you click the adapt section height to,first image size checkbox,the section itself will resize to fit,your images rather than constraining the,images to fit within the section,once you're done adjusting your section,settings click the heading block in the,left hand navigation,then enter a heading for this section in,the top right hand corner of the screen,once you're happy with your heading,select the text block in the left hand,navigation,once again navigate to the top right,hand corner of the screen,to update the text then enter your own,text in the top right hand corner of the,screen,after entering your own text click the,buttons block in the left hand,navigation,on the right hand side of the screen you,can select text and destinations for,your pair of buttons,as well as choosing between a solid,button style or an outlined button style,if you only want to display one button,simply remove the title and link from,the secondary button,if you want to customize this section,further you can do so by dragging the,various blocks up and down in the,left-hand navigation,to remove a selected block simply click,the remove block link in the bottom,right hand corner of the screen,if you change your mind and want to add,
