hey everyone jan here codingwithyan.com,building themes in 2022 and beyond a,brand hot topic especially since the,theme store reopened for new submissions,and we've already been covering quite a,bit throughout the last few interviews,with liam we've been talking about how,to come up with a concept how to compete,with existing themes,earning potentials the theme store,requirements how to pass the review,process and so on and so forth so if you,haven't seen these episodes yet i highly,recommend you check them out because,there's like so much good information in,there,but i also know you guys,you don't want to be sitting here all,day long and just brainstorm you want to,go out there and build things right so,that's exactly what we're going to be,talking about today we will ask liam,about the specific tools we need and how,to practically get started that will,make the whole series a lot more,complete,so then let's have a look alright liam,it's great to have you back one more,time um so how are you doing today,i'm great jan thanks for having me here,today always a honor and a pleasure to,be chatting with you and your audience,uh we've actually been working,internally on a lot of,interesting tools and resources so i'm,sure,team developers will be very excited to,see what we are releasing in the next,few months but uh otherwise,uh doing good i've been using actually a,lot of the tools that we'll be talking,in this video today so i have some,first-hand experience and insights to,share,and uh yeah just excited and happy to be,talking about building themes with you,today,awesome that sounds great um yeah so,then let's just cut the chase liam what,tools do i need to get started with,building themes from scratch,sure so the main tools that you will,want when you're setting up a,development environment that is suitable,for building themes as opposed to,customizing themes,would include,firstly a,development store that is associated,with your partner account,these are free to create and they act as,really great sandboxes that you can use,for,sending information to a store or,also downloading theme information or,store data from,and uh again totally free to create so,do uh feel free to create those uh,secondly uh you will need to be working,with a text editor on your local,computer so a program like vs code or,sublime,will let you edit the theme files so you,can edit the,liquid files javascript files css files,json files you'll be able to edit all of,those on your local computer with a text,editor of your choice,thirdly,you will likely want to work with the,shopify cli which allows you to transfer,information to and from your linked,development store,as well as generate a,what we call a development theme which,runs locally on your computer,and we'll be talking a little bit more,about that in this video,and uh fourthly and finally you will,likely want to work with the shopify,github integration which essentially,allows you to create,a version control,management s

hello and welcome in this video I'm,going to generate a Shopify team with a,lot more options so this is again going,to be a starter team and it does not,have anything out of the box but it is a,good starting point to develop your own,team so in the previous video as you,know we use the team kit to generate our,team but the templates are a lot,different than what we saw in the debut,team for example you don't have a,snippet you don't have sections you have,your missing muscle templates also if,you open some of them they have the only,thing they have it like the titles and,some subjects and if we come to the,customers if you open the login it does,not have the code even this could does,not do anything and this is not what we,want so I need something it should have,a little bit of coding out of the box,for me so it will save time and it is,going to be a standard team so how you,can do this one you can use this little,if you remember in the beginning of the,tutorial I said the air is a tool called,is literal this is developed by Shopify,teams but this is under low maintenance,you are not going to maintain it for now,because as I said this is not very good,because it does not work on Windows and,there are many more things about this,one I didn't like about this but the,good things they have they have a,stronger team like they can generate a,team for you which have most of the,feature out of the box it does not have,any styling but it has a lot of template,automatically like created if I come to,my account my account section it has all,the liquid file I need so I don't need,to coat the liquids and what is required,and what is not required it is already,there all you have to sell it so if you,come to the documentation here you don't,have to go through everything if you,want you can do this one but in the,guide how to create your own team you,can see if you have installed your in,your computer you can start creating,your own team so let's create team this,run this coming in our terminal and see,what happens so here in the directory I,am recording the video,I open power I will open the portion,here and I,test the code to see how it works oops I,forgot to copy this one sometimes,general does that if you copy it does,not take it so if you run this coming I,already have your install so make sure,you do have your initial and see what,this is going to create as you can see,it will download all the packages I will,do everything practically you don't have,to do everything I will push the code on,github all you have to do is you can,clone that repo and then you can start,creating your own tip that's all you,have to do for now I will do everything,manually if you are interested you can,watch it otherwise you can watch the,next video where I will show you how you,can clone it how you can push it and,pull it from github and start using it,so it will take a while to install,everything on configure so while this is,drink let's see what it has created here,is our team

hey scott austin here from jade puma in,this video i'm going to walk you through,the process we use a jade puma to,leverage github for versioning of themes,right there's multiple ways that you can,set this up so i'm going to show you how,we do it which works best for us but you,know you can do it your you know a,different way for for your business of,course,now i just created a new um,development store,and,so we're going to start from you know,scratch and how this is all set up so,here in this development store,i've got my original version of the flex,theme,and then,i have a,version of the flex theme that i've,edited and customized so,i always like to have the original,version in there so i can go back and,reference it and things like that,now here in the shopify admin you'll,notice there's an option under add theme,to,connect from github and we don't,directly connect our themes from github,to the shopify admin and the reason for,that is,um we're not the only people that are,touching this theme right so my clients,will sometimes edit the theme and app,support people will always be editing,the theme and you know as you work with,app you know support teams a lot of,times they'll copy your live theme do,their edits in an offline version and,then ask you to review it and then,publish that so because there's so many,people touching the theme and they're,making copies of it and changing out,which one's live,we find the connect from github option,not useful in those scenarios the,connect from github might be useful if,your only one team is touching the theme,at any time but so many people have so,many different organizations have their,fingers in the theme editing that we we,find going that route is not useful so,instead we use a shopify developed app,called theme kit to,save versions of the theme and save the,versioning of the theme over time how it,changes inside of github so we use that,for our purposes but don't ask our,clients or the different app support,teams to use that so it's a way for us,to keep track of what's going on inside,of a theme and what's been changed by us,or by other teams right it's really,useful to,you know take a snapshot of the theme,before you ask app support to do,something and then go back and look,afterwards take another snapshot of the,theme afterwards and see what has,changed,you know by that themes automated uh,processes or the support team so let's,walk you through that whole process of,how to set up theme kit in a store from,scratch so the first thing you're going,to need is you're going to need a github,account,and i'm not going to explain how to,create one of those there's plenty,tutorials out there in the world for,that and then i use a windows pc,so i also i'm going to be using the,github developed app,for um windows,so,we're going to assume you have those,figured out already so what i'm going to,do in my store is i'm first going to go,into apps and i'm going to customize my,store which takes you to the app store,

hey nerds my goal today is to make a,beautiful drawer cart for the dawn theme,whatever i wind up with i will put in a,github repo available below,um you can try it yourself if you're,feeling,very sassy,the rest of this video will be about the,process of making it,my favorite,drawer cart is on allbirds.com,and i can be,influenced by this design,as much as i like,i mean look how pretty that is are you,kidding me,out of my way lady i'm trying to look at,this car no,i got to interrupt this lighthearted,misogyny because i just edited that,video,and it was so long and so boring that i,simply cannot so i'm going to try again,leave off the debugging stuff,and try to keep this a high level,overview,first of all why make a cart at all why,not just install an app,they have drawer card apps that have,some upsell features built into them you,might be interested in those,um i had a look at the demos real quick,and my only problem is that they look a,bit gross,so i'm going to make my own,mine is not going to have any upsell,features i have to,limit the scope of my ambition here,but um,if you imagine that dawn just came with,a drawer cart that's kind of what i'm,shooting for,i found the javascript library called go,cart js,the demo looks like this,very basic but i like it as a starting,point,the installation instructions are pretty,good,the part of installation that caused the,most havoc with step number five they,tell you to add this id,to your add to cart form,and you know the dawn form already has,an id on it,so i replaced it with this and of course,that broke a lot of things because dawn,already had javascript targeting,the old id,so,you got to make sure if you're going to,update this id to update it everywhere,there's another wrinkle to this which is,that dawn actually has two,add to cart forms,on the product page,so we can find one form up here sort of,above the um,the options,and it has these input hidden input,elements in it,as another form down here,another add to cart form they both,they both submit to um the cart,this form also has the same hidden input,elements and when you change the options,the variant id here gets updated in both,forms,now,why didn't they just make all of this,a single add to cart form in dawn,i don't make themes for shopify so i,don't know why they made that choice i'm,sure there's a reason but i don't know,what it is,the point being if you try to use,go-kart with shopify,really kick the tires after installation,make sure that your quantity works make,sure that you can't add things to the,cart that aren't in stock make sure that,your error reporting still works because,all that stuff broke for me,and that's not really go kart's fault,that's just getting these things to play,nicely with each other,doesn't always go smoothly also when you,install go-kart the little cart icon,that opens the cart,this is coded,as just a div,you can see it here,and so if i were to,disable javascript on this page,this button,would no longer do anything

today i'm going to show you guys how to,set up shopify theme kit,to help you develop themes locally with,your own development tools that you're,used to,rather than using shopify's online cms,which is fine,but if you're a developer you can move,much more quickly with what you're used,to i'm also going to show you how to get,hot reload working so you can get that,smooth,butter development experience and really,get things done,right now,let's ride all right so what we have,here is the shopify theme kit home page,which you can see the url here if you,want to check that out and just real,quick,all it is is a local development,environment that allows you to edit,shopify themes and connect,to the shopify cms to upload your,content,so you can develop locally see the,changes on the website or on this,whatever store you're working on this,allows you to,not only create themes from scratch but,you can also edit existing themes by,connecting to whatever stores you need,to,downloading those themes making your,modifications and then syncing it up,so uh if you go to this page you'll i'm,not going to go through this,as far as the installation i've already,done it but it is pretty straightforward,personally i'm using wsl 2 on windows 10,so i followed the,linux installation um so this this,allows me to,uh let me fire up a terminal real quick,and you can see,when i type theme version i can see the,version so if you follow these steps,here in this uh document,you'll be able to get to that level um,what we do want to do,is go over real quick how to get api,access already covered here,so i'm going to flip over to a demo,store that i have created,and we're going to follow those these,instructions here,which are on the website,so i'm just going to go into my stores,uh apps here,and this is the first thing you need to,do is set up your store,to use private apps so i'm clicking,manage private apps let me go back,because you want to make sure you're all,the way at the bottom it's really hidden,down here,manage private apps um you're gonna i'm,gonna disregard all this i'm just gonna,do it because,i know this is what i want to do i'm,gonna agree to all this junk,enable private app development and then,we're gonna need to actually create a,private app,so let's go ahead and do that create,private app we're going to call it,um i don't know you probably would want,to name it something to do with your,theme or whatever i'm just going to call,it demo private app and i'm just going,to,pause the video real quick and put my,email in here so we want to,actually expand this show inactive admin,permissions,and we want to make sure if we scroll,down here,um we're going to see the theme section,somewhere here it is theme section i,want to make sure we have read write,access,for themes so that's pretty much all we,need to do here we can hit save,at the top or we can just scroll down,and hit save here,and you can read that stuff if you want,i'm gonna go ahead and hit create,app because i got
