Find Zip Codes in a Radius using Excel

this is Betty Hughes for CDX,technologies and we'd like to show you,how you can filter a large address list,in Microsoft Excel,in order to find only those addresses,within a particular radius area this can,really be useful for identifying,possible customers for a new store for,example or really for designing any kind,of direct mail campaign so in this,worksheet we have a list of address,information we're using a couple of,dozen addresses here but this whole,process is really tailor-made for very,long address lists and as we go through,it we'll show you a couple of techniques,that will help you deal with long lists,of data in Excel so let's say we want to,identify which of these addresses are,within a 5-mile radius of the zip code,for 8 906 first we're going to go to a,brand new worksheet and in this first,cell we right click and from the drop,down menus we select a special function,called CDX radius an input box pops up,and all we need to do is input our,target zip code for 8 906 and also the,radius distance of 5 miles click OK,and in the first column is the list of,returned zip codes within the 5 mile,radius the first one is our target zip,code and in the second column is the,distance from the target the zip code 4,8 9 2 4 for instance is 2.9 6 miles from,the target zip now before we go back to,the address list we need to do one more,thing here we're going to select all the,return data and define this as a range,so select insert from the toolbar name,define and we'll call this range of zip,lists so let's go back to the address,list and we're going to put a new,heading in column E we'll call it,distance and in the first cell we're,going to input a lookup function that,basically asks if the ZIP code in this,first row can be found in the list we,just created in the other worksheet so,in the cell we type equal vlookup,parentheses,we're looking for the first step code in,cell d2 we're looking for it in the,range we just defined in the other,worksheet called zip list and if it is,found we want the distance from the,target zip returned to this cell so we,put two here indicating this data is in,the second column of the zipless range,finally we type false indicating we want,to find an exact match then close,parenthesis and after hitting Enter it,looks like the zip code was found in the,other list and it's three point seven,two miles from the target zip now what,we have to do is copy this formula down,the list and here we come to our first,tip instead of copying and pasting which,can be a pretty awkward process for a,long address list which is going to,click on this first cell then place the,cursor at the bottom right hand corner,of the cell until we see a cross like,this then just double click the lookup,formula is automatically copied all,along the list until it comes to an,empty row at the end one thing worth,mentioning here when you're using the,lookup function you must make sure that,the zip code data here is formatted just,like the data in the other

how do you go from this to this,by simply changing one settings that's,what i'm going to show you today,let's do this,and welcome to another episode of,talking tech with the techie guy my name,is leron segev where i make tech,simple if you're into phones gadget apps,tips and tricks on how to,hit that subscribe button and let's get,on to today's show,so you've gone grocery shopping and,you've come home and there are,loads of items all which need to be,carried inside which would you rather do,carry each item individually or stick,them into a carrier bag,well most of us will prefer fewer trips,to and from the cars so,loads of item in a carrier bag is faster,and more efficient,the only thing we need to really worry,about is overloading the bag,as things will fall out and basically we,would have to make more trips again this,is how our computers work too,but some data are sent and received and,together they make up whatever it is,we happen to be doing online most of us,get our computer,simply connected to the router and modem,open a website,internet seems to be loading so it's all,working,sure technically it's working but it's,not optimized,it's like making those separate trips to,and from the car to get each item,individually,versus using the bag so how do we make,our computers as efficient as carrying,items in a bag,well we do that by telling our computers,to pack loads of data,into a big bag and make fewer trips and,we do that,by increasing the size of the mtu the,maximum transmission,unit this is done in two steps step,number one is to find out what is the,maximum data packet our computer can,handle,as we don't want to overfill our data,packet if we do,just like the carrier bag the items are,gonna drop out in other words data's,gonna drop out,and it's gonna require more trips once,we have that we move on to step number,two which is to tell a computer,hey use this as the mtu size don't worry,both of these steps are super simple and,i'm going to show you exactly how to do,that,right let's start off with a baseline so,first i'm going to show you that my,ethernet,is currently set to 576 mtu,so based on that let's run the good old,speed test what are we gonna get,on that ping nine milliseconds that's,pretty good,the download speed is 140 150,megabits per second bear in mind i'm on,a 450 megabits per second line,and what's the upload 16.73 my upload,cap is at 20.,so clearly i'm not getting the speed,that i'm paying for,so let's begin the test to see how i can,optimize my system,all right so step number one how do you,find out what is the right,mtu size for you and your computer as,all our computers are going to be,slightly different,well we're going to do that using the,good old ping command,the thing command is basically just says,to your website hey website,are you there please reply with your ip,address so,ping google.com and google replies with,its ip address but what we're going to,do is use that command to send the,biggest ping,and either one of t

Formatting Canadian Postal codes

we are going to talk about cleaning up the format of Canadian postal codes I worked this,week on a list of thousands of entries and the postal codes had been entered a number,of people and so you had a great variety and the formatting was quite often off.,So I developed a method of testing the formatting of the cell and then apply the correct formatting,to the postal codes so let us start go to the first one here so the first thing that,we are going to check is we are going to check and see that there is seven characters so,that there is a space in between the first three characters and the second three characters,. So let us start with an if.,= if and then we are going to go len and then we will go opening bracket and then we are,going to select the cell that we would like to select the length of and then we are going,to close the bracket and we are going to go if it is less than 7 then there is not a space,so we are going to add a space we are going to select the first 3 characters from the,left side, left and opening bracket and we are going to select the cell and we are going,to put a comma in there and then we will close the bracket and then we need to put a space,in there so let us put the and symbol and quotation marks and a space and quotation,marks and now we are going to get the three characters from the right side so let us go,the and symbol again and we will go right and we will go select the cell and we want,the characters and then we are going to close the bracket and we are going to close that,bracket we have done the space now and then if the length is 7 or greater we are just,going to put a comma there and we are going to supply the value of the cell.,select ; the cell and then we are going to close the bracket now this looks like it is,fine except there is one problem we need to have all the letters in upper case.,So lets put an upper around this so let us go in front of the if upper which is specifying,that we need to have upper case here and then we need to have a closing bracket at the end.,press enter there was not any change there but drag down,and so here we have a postal code that has no spaces and no capital letters and here,it has formatted it perfectly it has put spaces in all of these and has changed them to upper,case.So that is how we format our Canadian Postal Codes in Excel Please Subscribe
