Charity w/ Fr. Aquinas Guilbeau, O.P. (Aquinas 101)

Although St. Thomas spends more time in the,Summa Theologiae discussing faith and charity, he is remembered more for his treatment there,of charity than of faith.,This is because his doctrine of charity contains at least two revolutionary ideas.,I call these ideas revolutionary, not because they do violence to the Christian tradition, regarding charity, but because they mark a new moment in the Church's appreciation of,the virtue.,The first revolutionary or pioneering idea of Aquinas emerges from his treatment of the, object of charity and the second from his treatment of the act of charity.,Let's begin our discussion however, by reviewing briefly what Aquinas says about the subject,of charity.,Where is the seat of charity in the human person?,Aquinas responds to this question by explaining that because charity is concerned not with, knowing God, but with loving him.,Charity resides in and perfect the human power concerned with loving, which is the will.,Now right away, Aquinas notes that the human will loves with one of two loves, the love,of concupiscence and the love of benevolence or friendship.,With the love of concupiscence we love some, good for our own sake.,This is the love with which we love the goods that keep us alive and help us to grow in,virtue.,We love these goods, hamburgers, winter coats, health, education, for the benefits that they, offer us.,We love ourselves when we love these goods for our own sake.,With the love of benevolence, however, we love some good, not for our sake, but for, another's sake.,This is the love that constitutes friendship.,By willing some good for another we regard the other as another self.,We love our friend when we love his goods for his sake.,Once Aquinas distinguishes these two loves,of the human will, he asks which of the two does grace elevate and direct towards God?,It turns out that grace elevates both.,Hope elevates the love of concupiscence such that we can love God Himself as our final, end, as the final good for me.,Charity elevates the love of benevolence such that we love God Himself as a friend, not,for our sake, but for his sake.,And this is where the first of Aquinas' revolutionary ideas emerges in his treatment of charity.,He sees the whole reality and work of the virtue through the lens of friendship.,Unlike anyone before him, Aquinas produces a theology of charity that reflects deeply,on Christ's words to the apostles at the last supper, "No longer do I call you servants.,I have called you friends.",This brings us to Aquinas's description of the object of charity. Considered materially,,the object of charity is the same as the object of faith and hope,,God Himself.,Like the acts of faith and hope the act of charity ends and rests in God Himself.,Considered formally, however, the object of charity remains distinct from the objects,of faith and hope.,If faith inclines to God as first truth spoken and if hope inclines to God as final good, promised, then that aspect of God himself to which cha

What Charity Really Means

What Charity Really Means

it's one of the seven virtues of,Christianity it used to have a central, place in Roman ethics and Judaism as,well today we remain deeply impressed by,the idea of charity but often from a,distance without probing the concept too, deeply with little attempt to practice,it systematically it's something we,might have recourse to when we're moved,by a documentary on TV or have some, loose change left over after the, holidays at its most basic charity means, giving someone something they need but, can't get for themselves and normally, that's understood to mean something, material we overwhelmingly associate, charity with giving money the heroes of,Christianity are exemplars of just such, charity outside the city st. Francis, comes across a poor man his garments are, thin and ragged winter is coming on and, coats are expensive the saint is moved,to charity but at its core charity goes, far beyond finance it's about, recognizing that a person needs help, with something that they can't do for, themselves and that their helplessness,is not a sign of wickedness or sin but,is part of the human condition we freely, give because we appreciate how often we,wouldn't have made it if other people, had not at key points in different, contexts cut us some slack it's in,relationships that charity becomes, particularly necessary here we don't,generally require the charity of money, cloaks and free meals what we are short,of is charity of interpretation that is,a charitable perspective on our, weaknesses eccentricities anxieties and, follies failings that we're unable to,explain or win sympathy for that we,merely act out with immaturity and hurt,it might be the one person in a couple, has badly messed up in their, professional life, they made a significant decision at work, that played out badly they got severely, criticized there was talk of court, action for months they were agitated and, hard to live with they couldn't,articulate their fears they were sullen, and irascible their partner might have, added stern admonitions to those of the, regulator the senior management and, people on Twitter they could have, concluded that their partner was inept,Reidy maybe a bit unprincipled but, instead a charitable soul does the work, the partner has not been able to do they,do the explaining for them they, understand enough about their past to,have a picture of where their impatience, and over ambition come from they hold in,mind what happened with their parents, and with a move to another country and, with a brother who died too young they, lend a picture of who the beggar is that,is sufficiently generous and complex as,to make them more than just the fool or,the weirdo they could so easily have, been dismissed as the genuinely, charitable person gives generously from,a sense that they to stand in need of,charity not right now not over this, necessarily but in some other area they, know that self-righteousness is merely, the result of a faulty memory an,inability to hold in mind at moments, when one is totally right how o

Charities, fundraising, and MAXIMUM VIRTUE

Charities, fundraising, and MAXIMUM VIRTUE

So, who's up for a good old-fashioned ethics discussion? I promise there'll be plenty for,us to talk about. Like charity! Giving to charity is something you might think would,be very uncontroversial, and almost universally accepted as a good thing. But you'd be wrong.,I know I was! As it turns out, people still manage to find reasons to complain about charities.,And I don't exclude myself from that, either. I've made it very clear that I don't think, people should donate to the Salvation Army because of their anti-gay policies and their, history of anti-gay campaigning, especially when there are comparable charities that don't,do this. But beyond simply pointing out the completely unnecessary bigotry of a charitable, organization, a lot of the complaints I've heard rise to the level of, frankly, incredible, assholism. Most of it seems to revolve around three central issues: The choice of which, causes should be supported, how efficient different charities are, and whether we should, even draw attention to charitable causes. As I've found out, people do get really worked,up about this. So, what is the best way for us to support charities, if indeed we even, should? First of all: How do we decide which causes to support? I ran into this argument, when I participated in a BlogTV event for an AIDS charity, and someone basically told,me that I shouldn't. Why would that be? Well, according to them, anyone who has AIDS must, have been "irresponsible" or "promiscuous", and AIDS is really just a "non-issue", relatively, speaking. And since, apparently, it's nothing but a "gay issue", I'm actually being "selfish",by... helping people with AIDS.,See? Some people are nuts! But the implications of this had me wondering: Should AIDS charities, not receive any support at all, since they're just not important enough? Or, if not AIDS,,are there some causes that are so unimportant, we shouldn't give to them? In general, how, should we best allocate our resources? The same issue crops up with breast cancer awareness.,It's practically inevitable that someone will say, "what about lung cancer or prostate cancer?",And suppose we do decide to donate to lung cancer or prostate cancer charities instead.,But wait -- then people would say, "what about breast cancer?","Hey ZJ, why don't you do a video about Islam? What are you, scared?","How dare you insult the prophet! I bet you wouldn't say that about Jesus!",Yeah, I know how it is. So what do we do? Well, we could just determine whichever cause, does the most good, and throw all our money at it. Why would we want to give money to,something that does less good? The problem is that the rest of these causes can still,be important, even if they're not *as* important, and we can't just completely neglect them.,You can throw all the money in the world at heart disease, but it still won't cure AIDS.,So maybe our resources should be allocated to causes in proportion to their importance:,more funding goes to more important charities, and less

Foreign Aid: Are we really helping others or just ourselves? | Maliha Chishti | TEDxUTSC

I love the idea of foreign aid don't you,you see I see it as an opportunity to,practice the virtues of compassion and, generosity to help others especially in,times of war and conflict aid workers do,some great work they build schools they, provide access to clean water healthcare, they deliver emergency food aid to,people who are suffering but good, intentions aside on a much much larger, scale foreign aid has not improved the, lives and living conditions of the, world's most poorest and vulnerable, people it just hasn't and this is,despite an international aid apparatus, that has been set up with thousands of,organizations and institutions that, distribute billions of dollars of aid to,every corner of the world over the past,50 years you see the gap between the, world's richest and poorest countries is,tremendous and it's increasing in my own, work researching war affected States I,can tell you that Aid has not achieved, desirable results in places like Angola,Rwanda Sierra Leone Somalia Kosovo,Afghanistan Iraq and what's worse is,that the international aid community, keeps making the same mistakes over and, over and over again and they keep, getting away with it oh it's all too, complicated they'll tell you,but what if it's not what if giving aid,to the world's poorest communities are, just stories we tell each other to feel, good about ourselves as a nation but, that the infrastructure of third-world,aid is set up in such a way that we,living in the richest part of the world, have been benefiting it from it all, along I can pull out the facts that, indicate but for every dollar of aid, rich countries give to poor countries, they receive between seven to ten, dollars back through debt repayment, profits trade etc and if you add that up,each year according to the UN conference,on Trade and Development there is a net, transfer of wealth that moves from the, poorest countries of the world to the, richest countries in the amount of 200,billion dollars a year Wow our poor, countries subsidizing the wealth of rich, countries in any case we have a serious, problem and to fix the problem we can't,rely on the same structures and, paradigms that created it in the first, place what we need is an ethical and a,conscientious pause as a consultant and,a researcher on Afghanistan I am,painfully aware that billions of dollars,of aid did not reach the majority of,Afghans and this is devastating, considering after the us-led invasion of,Afghanistan there was a genuine sense in,the international community to help,Afghans, and Afghan women especially because they, suffered tremendously from decades of,war and living under the repressive, regime of the Taliban at around this, time 2002 I was working with an Afghan, women's organization based here in,Toronto that for many years was, supporting local women's group, across Afghanistan these groups were, doing some important work they were, educating girls and providing basic, support and services to countless women, under the Taliban regime, well we approached thi

Giving to Charity is Selfish, This is Why

Giving to Charity is Selfish, This is Why

hey 42 here when was the last time you, gave to charity, maybe you popped your change into the, collection bucket at your local store, perhaps you give a few quid monthly via,one or more subscriptions to your, favorite charities, maybe you got bullied by some bloke in,the streets he was armed with a,clipboard and a fake smile into, subscribing to some Bazaar charity that, gives out eye patches to one-eyed,pheasants and you've regretted it ever, since, you just can't stomach the guilt of,canceling your Direct Debit don't worry,we've all been there, now let me ask you when you gave to,charity how did it make you feel I'm,willing to bet you felt pretty damn good, about yourself in one study that, involved brain MRIs it was found that, when we voluntarily make donations a,part of the brain called the ventral, striatum lit up this is the reward, center of the brain and it also lights,up when people do cocaine in other words, giving to charity is a highly hedonistic, pursuit the researchers behind this, story refer to the feeling when people, made donations as a warm glow people, know that when they give a fiver to a,dog shelter they will get a warm glow, that's why they do it it has very little,to do with the dogs themselves yes I am,insinuating that giving to charity is a,selfish act we do it because it makes us,feel good not because it actually does,God and I can prove it about 10% of,people will give money at every, opportunity 10% will never give and the, remaining 80% will give if the, opportunity in front of them talks it,just to write heartstrings of emotional, guilt but it's not actually the guilt, that makes the people give it's the fact, that they know they will feel better, about themselves afterwards they will, feel lot warm glow a study published in,the Journal of Neuroscience found that, most people in that 80% brackets only, give when they think their donation will, put a smile on us,cific person's face not many people's,faces but one specific individual who, they can envision smiling because the, brains pleasure centers are activated, when we make others smile and ultimately, that is what the donor is seeking that's,feeling of self gratification the study, found that people are less likely to,give when confronted with statistics, over the plight of an individual for, instance if a bunch of people were shown,a TV ad that explains how contaminated, drinking water causes the deaths of half,a million Africans each year according,to the research these people are very, unlikely to give money to help fix that, however if those same people are shown, the story of young malnourished Timmy, who treks 3 miles barefoot every day to,collect dirty water for his family a,large number of those people would, donate money because they can envision, their donation putting a smile on the, face of Timmy, whereas helping out half a million, people well it feels cold empty it,doesn't activate the same pleasure, responses in the brain in fact it goes, even further because studies have found, that when the scale
