Getting started with the Shippo API

hi everyone i'm richard developer,evangelist here in Shippo today we're,going to be going over the Shippo object,architecture a little bit about setting,up your account in Shippo and then we're,going to be going through a basic,shipment creation flow which is going to,involve address verification getting,real-time rates creating labels and then,we're going to leave plenty of time at,the end for questions and answers if you,have any so with that let's go ahead and,get right into it so object architecture,occipital we want to cover the some of,the concepts and how Shippo handles,creating shipments addresses parcels we,always refer to things as objects some,objects are composed of other objects,and some are generated by objects and so,we want to just sort of dig into a few,specific ones there are quite a few,different types of objects at UFO but I,want to focus on those related to,creating shipments and creating labels,so right here we have a what our basic,flow looks like so you can see that we,have the to address objects and a parcel,object that's used to create a shipment,and that's what a shipment is composed,of at the basic level there's few other,objects that a shipment can contain but,that is what a shipment is basically,made of and then that's what will create,the rates which will actually exist in,that shipment as an array of different,grade objects and those raid objects are,actually created by a carrier object,what it isn't shown here because we,didn't really want to focus on that but,each one of those rates comes from one,of those carrier objects then you use,that rate object in order to create a,transaction than the transaction,triggers the creation of a track object,and the track object will repeatedly,update the transaction with information,about the status of the shipment just to,actually let's go back really quick,because I just want to mention that some,of the other object types that aren't,listed here is our carrier object or,manifest object or batch object and our,customs object those you've used for a,few more advanced things that you can do,in shippo but we'll still be covering a,little bit on the carrier object later,so I,wanted to focus on the ship and object,because this is the most complex of all,the objects that we have here in ship o,the most basic part is to address,objects you have your address tool in,your address from and then your parcels,object which is where you're actually,defining the dimensions and weight of,your shipment after you actually do that,in the creation step your return back,what would look like this but this is,like a very abstract version of that so,you're gonna actually get a bunch of,raid objects in your rates field and,that's what you're gonna be using for,choosing which rate you want to use or,creating a label another concept that I,wanted to cover is a sink versus sink,this is pretty important to understand,before you actually start programming,against our your API because we actually,do everyt

hi there welcome to Shippo I'm gonna,take you on a quick tour of our site,just to get you started this is the,shipments page this is where all your,labels are gonna live once you start,creating labels in Shippo this is also,where I'll be able to find the tracking,information for your labels and request,a refund on any labels that you don't,use the orders page is where your order,data will be stored it's where you'll,start when you actually want to create a,label there are a couple ways to get,orders into Shippo first you can sync,your actual store with the Shippo,website so if you have shopify,bigcommerce Weebly or another platform,that Shippo supports you can connect,your store right to Shippo if you don't,have one of those platforms you can also,use the import CSV option that uploads,an Excel spreadsheet of your order data,or you can simply create orders one by,one manually the carriers page is where,you're going to find the information,about the carrier's link to your Shippo,account all Shippo accounts come with,access to shippo's discounted USPS and,DHL Express accounts that's how we get,you those great rates we also have,Parcel force activated for our UK,customers if you want to add your own,carrier to shippo such as FedEx or UPS,click Add shared carrier account click,the carrier you'd like and enter the,information requested the connects page,will show you your store information if,you do have one of those stores I,mentioned connected you can edit the,connection here or add additional stores,the billing page is where all your,financial information is going to live,in Shippo you can enter your credit card,information here or you can change it,once you've add a credit card you'll,also see any shippo invoices you've,received listed out here the settings,page is an important one it's where you,can change your label format the default,is 8 and a half by 11 PDF so that's just,for standard inkjet or laser jet,printers if you use a thermal label,printer like a dime oh you can switch,that to the 4x6 inch PDF and get the,right setting for your label printer you,can also add text to your labels like,thank you for shipping with us or you,can add the order number and that'll be,unique on each label you can set your,default packaging here if you use the,same box sides every time you don't want,to type it in you can put in those,dimensions here and save that or if you,know you use USPS flat rate boxes every,time you can also save that you can set,a default weight if you're shipping the,same weight every time you can also auto,create return labels so that every label,you create and shippo a return label,will also be created the account tab is,where you can change your address,information this address information you,see here is for your sender address so,that's gonna be used to actually,calculate the shipping you want to make,sure that's accurate so you get the,right rates if you don't want that,address to be used on the return label,however you can change
