Lessons from a startup that scaled up | Kurtis McBride | TEDxUW
you, when I was 12 years old I ran a mouse,Empire in my parents basement it all, started with a drive to PJ's pet center,in the family station wagon we all piled,in drove out to the pet store I got to,pick out a mouse found a nice orange one, brought it home set up the cage put, shavings in food water as a 12 year old, this was one of the most exciting, moments of my life and over the next, couple of weeks I fed this mouse and I,watched it get rounder and rounder and, rounder and one morning I woke up and, there wasn't one Mouse anymore there, were eight and I ran downstairs all, excited told my parents I have a pet, mice this is the greatest thing ever, but they weren't so excited about this, they had agreed to have one pet mouse in,the house but weren't so happy about eat,but we agreed that we should let these, mice grow up a little bit but we were, going to take them back to PJ's pet, center so after a few weeks these mice, had grown to a certain size we piled, back in the family station wagon and we,drive out to PJ's Pet Center and we go,in and we say here we have these extra, mice and they say thank you very much,we're gonna give you 50 cents for every, white Mouse and we'll give you $1 for,all the brown mice so I'm 12 years old,and I'm thinking this is unbelievable I,just make $5 so I go home and, immediately I start working on my first, business plan and a couple days later I,come down to the kitchen table say mom,dad I have this business plan instead of,making $5 once I'm gonna make literally, dozens of dollars a month so to this day,I'm not sure why they agreed but they, let me go get another mouse a male mouse, and we went from having two mice in the, house to five to 10 and ultimately I was, producing 40 mice a month and selling, them to PJ's pet center at this point my,landlords aka my parents, said 40 mice is a little bit stinky it's,really awkward when our friends come, over so how about this we'll give you an,allowance but you got to go and get rid,of all these mice and so ended my first, business with my first successful exit,fast-forward now I graduate from, university I decide you know having gone, through co-op decide I don't want to go,and work for someone else I'm gonna, start my own business go out and buy a,book like good - great which talks about, how you build a really strong nucleus, for your company by bringing the right, people in we grow the company a little, bit we start to you know have to figure, out products we buy books like crossing, the chasm or the lean startup that help, you you know find product market fit and,get your first customers and that allows,us to continue to grow the business,we're now approaching 70 people and, something starts to happen this this, team worked this engagement level this, culture we had starts to waffle so we do,what we've always done we go to chapters, and we buy a book this time on hierarchy, and talks about the CEO needs to hire,VPS who needs to happen need to hire, directors who hire managers and this, will fix your problem s

How Apple and Nike have branded your brain | Your Brain on Money | Big Think
How Apple and Nike have branded your brain | Your Brain on Money | Big Think
- Coke is just soda.,Tylenol is just acetaminophen.,And Levi's are just jeans.,Yet consumers go out of their way,to select these specific
brands over others.,- An economist would say,,"How is this possible,,that a rational consumer
would be willing to pay more, for exactly the same thing?",We love to think about
ourselves as rational.,That's not how it works.,A very famous study done by
colleagues at Duke University, flashed either the Apple
logo or the IBM logo,to two randomized groups of participants.,- The study found that, after being subliminally exposed,to the Apple logo, compared to,when you'd been exposed to the IBM logo,,participants performed
better on creative tasks.,- And the argument is that
Apple has been telling you, this story over and over again,,that Apple is the brand for
hip, cool, fun, creative people.,- This is the true power of brands.,They can influence our behavior in ways, that extend way beyond the point of sale.,So to what degree can
the influence of brands, wreak havoc on our ability,to make rational spending decisions?,This is your brain on money.,This is Americus Reed.,He studies identity and marketing,at the University of Pennsylvania.,When I make choices
about different brands,,I'm choosing to create an identity.,When I put that shirt on,,when I put those shoes
on, those jeans, that hat,,someone is going to form an
impression about what I'm about.,So if I'm choosing Nike over Under Armour,,I'm choosing a kind of
different way to express, affiliation with sport.,The Nike thing is about performance.,The Under Armour thing
is about the underdog.,I have to choose which of these, different conceptual pathways,is most consistent with
where I am in my life.,- And once a consumer makes that choice,,their relationship with a
brand can deepen to the point, where they identify with
that brand like family.,And once you identify with a brand,,it can shape the way you behave.,- And it's really interesting
because they will also,,if someone talks bad about that
product, brand, or service,,they will be the first
to go out and defend.,Why?,Because an attack on the brand
is an attack on themselves.,- Michael Platt is a professor of,neuroscience, marketing, and psychology, whose research demonstrates how,our perception of brands
influences our decisions.,- There's an idea in
marketing, which is that,we relate to brands in the
same way we relate to people.,It's like, "I love this brand,"
or, "I hate this brand.",Of course, what people
say, right, can often be,different from what's really
going on in their heads.,So we thought, "Well, why don't we just, ask the brain directly?",- Michael and his team
observed the brains of,iPhone users and Samsung Galaxy
users with an MRI machine, while they heard good,
bad, and neutral news, about Apple and Samsung.,- Apple customers showed,a brain empathy response toward Apple, that was exactly what you'd see
in the way you would respond,to somebody in your own family.,- Strangely, Samsung users, didn't have any p

This is What You Should be Doing In order to Scale Your Business!
This is What You Should be Doing In order to Scale Your Business!
ah how are you it's fiving here probably, about linear and Trinity coach marketing, expert web designer and you're a,friendly neighborhood coach I'm just, kidding hopefully I'm having a really, really great day and I wanted to come, here to talk about something that is,really really important to me on a lot,of levels in my own business and I feel, like it's really the thing that every, single business owner needs to have in,order to scale basically there's no way,in my mind at least that we can scale, without it and there is kind of it's,kind of a two-fold thing basically what,I'm talking about is systems and, processes okay every single business out, there needs to have systems in order to,expand so what do I mean by this let me,talk about this on a business, perspective and then on a marketing, perspective because I think both of them, are important now for me I have a very, kind of unique type of business I would, say because I am a type of person that,is very left brain so super creative, everything's super creative I'm,resigning I'm doing logos I'm doing, websites I'm writing copy I'm writing, scripts for webinars and stuff like that,or for whatever marketing my clients are, using but I'm also somebody who is very, much right brain so I'm super into like, okay how can I create a system that, really brings things you know kind of,works well and and how do i systematize, things like how do I make things almost, automated right so what I have felt is,really really fundamental when you're,trying to scale your business when, you're trying to grow to the next level,is understanding how to turn your, business into a process and at least, this is something has really helped me,because for me what would used to happen, before I had processes really, established is that I sometimes was lost, and my clients were lost - right so I,had to cry and come in and I would do,things kind of randomly okay let's do,this let's let's,with asking these questions and then, let's do that thing but then I would, take so much time and then my clients, would feel like they were out of the, loop and not really sure about what was, going on so what I ended up doing was, really turning my business into like a,well-oiled machine right and the reason, for this is really to give me and to,give my clients a sense of comfort and a,sense of like certainty of what's going,on at every moment that we're working, together so let me explain this in the, very clear sense because I think this, might be a little bit confusing, basically what it means is that right, now when I have a client come in they, come in they immediately get an email, from me saying okay welcome aboard, here's the next step for you they get, access to a client platform that I have, where there's a first video training of,me a very short like 15 minute video, saying okay this is what this process is,gonna be like we're gonna start here I,need you to fill out this questionnaire, these are the things that I need you to,understand about the questions that I'm,gonna

How A Small Jewelry Company turned $40 into $1.2m
How A Small Jewelry Company turned $40 into $1.2m
this small jewelry brand turned a 40,initial investment into 1.2 million, dollars in annual revenue in just three, years and here's the interesting thing,it did so without any paid ads, instead founder liv portillo grew dbl, jewelry to a seven-figure business one, organic social media post at a time in,fact i've identified four specific, instagram and tiktok posts that, catapulted dbl jewelry from an arts and, crafts side hustle to a business that, made four hundred thousand dollars in,revenue in november of 2021.,in this video i'll break down why those, social media posts worked and how you,can learn from them to start and grow, your own business,so the product liv chose to sell had a,lot to do with her social media success, but not in the way you might expect when, she was 16 live borrowed 40 from her, parents so she could buy supplies to,make jewelry at home, liv posted photos of her jewelry on,snapchat and her friends asked if they, could buy some and they were, particularly interested in liv's custom, name necklaces, now that seems counterintuitive it's,rare for a business to scale when its, most popular product is custom and, handmade after all you can't mass, produce custom handmade jewelry unless, you hire a team to help and you can't,hire a team to help without a lot of,demand for your product but that brings,us to the first post that helped dbl, jewelry grow,it's a photo of a customer wearing their, custom name necklace, now there's nothing particularly special, about the photo what's special is the, tactic behind the post because the, necklace was custom made this customer, was more motivated to share it with, their friends and followers and this, made dbl jewelry share worthy in the, posts that follow we see that the custom, nature of dbl jewelry's products, encouraged organic user generated, content about the brand which in turn, brought in more sales after this post, liv spent the next few years hustling, she was growing her business via her, instagram account and eventually opened, her own online store with shopify then, the pandemic hit and this is where, everything changed like many of us live, downloaded tik tok when she was stuck in,quarantine and that brings us to the, second key social media post in liv's,success story this tick tock uploaded in,march and now sitting at about 5.7,million views,so i asked you guys in the last video, what name and butterfly color to make, and the first one we commented was lily, time to attach the chin, lily with a lavender butterfly now we,gotta add the purple butterfly, and it's done,if you want me to make your name then, comment on this video or the previous, one it's this tick tock that catapulted, live to one million tick tock followers, overnight now why is that liv had shared, her products on tick tock before but, this was the first time she showed her, customers how she made her jewelry and, this is the counter-intuitive genius of,selling custom-made products in the tick, tock era, process is content, after nearly a decade of seeing shiny, finishe

How Amazon's Super-Complex Shipping System Works
How Amazon's Super-Complex Shipping System Works
This video was made possible by Hover.,Professionalize your web presence with a custom
domain and email address for 10% off at hover.com/Wendover.,About 13 million times per day, someone clicks
the order button on amazon.com.,Some days later, all, or at least almost all,
of those 13 million orders arrive at their, destination.,But what happens in between?,How does Amazon get a package to you?,Well, it depends… a lot.,In fact, Amazon’s fulfillment system, their
shipping system, is more complicated and convoluted, than that of almost any logistics company.,It’s far more complicated than that of UPS,
or FedEx, or DHL, or any other major delivery, company.,In a counterintuitive way, this complicated
and convoluted fulfillment system is a crucial, component of the secret sauce that’s driving
Amazon’s success.,They’re striving to make the consumer experience
simple through behind-the-scenes complexity.,So, back to the question: how does an Amazon
package get to you, and the answer, it depends.,It depends first on who’s fulfilling the
package—Amazon or the seller.,About one fourth of sales in the US are fulfilled
directly by the seller, as most products on,Amazon are listed there by a third-party,
which can send packages directly through UPS,,FedEx, the postal service, or another consumer
delivery company if they choose.,Amazon has nothing to do with the fulfillment
of those orders, and the process looks largely, the same as with any other e-commerce company.,What’s different is how the other three
quarters of Amazon packages in the US get,to you—the ones that are fulfilled directly
by Amazon.,The path that these take depends first on
how big the package is.,You see, Amazon’s fulfillment centers are
more-or-less split into three categories:,small sortable, large sortable, and large
non-sortable.,That first category, small sortable, represents
the bread and butter of Amazon’s business.,These are items that are less than 12 by 16
by 6 inches or 30 by 40 by 15 centimeters,in size, and about 25 pounds or 11 kilograms
in weight.,The next category, large sortable, is basically
anything larger than this up to a weight of,about 60 pounds or 27 kilograms.,Now, the reason for the split between large
and small is because the fulfillment operations,of smaller items is much easier to automate—they
can fit on conveyor belts and automated robots, and other tools that lower the company's reliance
on humans.,For example, Amazon uses a robot called the
Kiva which fundamentally changed the way the,job of the company’s pickers, the people
who find and grab an item out of storage,,worked.,Previously, pickers would walk some 10 to
12 miles or 16 to 19 kilometers a day through, cavernous rows of shelves.,Now, at least in their most advanced fulfillment
centers, a robot picks up an entire mobile, shelf, on which a required product is located,
and transports it to the picker, who picks,it.,Essentially, rather than the picker going
to the shelf, the shelf goes to the picker.,With these

How I Bring In $350K A Year Selling Jewelry | On The Side
How I Bring In $350K A Year Selling Jewelry | On The Side
i think my aesthetic in a nutshell is,the girls that get it get it like if you, know you know my name is maya porterial,i'm 27 years old and i made 350 000 last, year for my side hustle,so right out of college i wanted to,initially be a fashion designer i,realized, designing fashion is really expensive, and i had a hard time making the money,in order to get the patterns made get,the samples made and actually produce, and sell the line,so,i was only a month and a half in and i,was sitting in the office with my two, associates, and i said i'm gonna start a jewelry, brand and they thought i was insane they, probably still think i'm insane because,i pulled it off,so i really only started this business, with roughly, two thousand dollars,it took me about a month and a half to,develop the idea, get the process going and i started with, just a single ring so initially when i,found my suppliers, they had private label and private label, means that you can essentially put your, name on a design they already have,so cad is pretty much a 3d render,of your concept so you have the,top of the ring the bottom of the ring, what the inside detail looks like if,they're gonna, stamp your your company name inside it,gives you a 360 view of,the ring and then once i found my first, product i called her ria it took me,forever to think of that name i went on,babybabynames.com for that one i found, maria, and i was ready to go,damian was one of the first influencers, who gave my business a real shot she was,the first influencer to post my jewelry, which kind of started the trickle of,other girls wanting to work with me and, respecting the brand, she just randomly posted, her new nail set her new acrylics, and my one ring, and from there i got my first sale and, believe it or not i was under pricing, like crazy, that ring, cost me,maybe seven dollars to make and i sold,it for 18.99 and was very excited about,it,my first month it was like zero zero but, then by the fourth month,i went from zero to five hundred dollars, and then 500 quickly became a thousand, and then a couple months in i was doing,10 000 a month now,10 000 a month means, you know we can we can we can finally, pay for the subway,so once i started to get a consistent 10,grand a month,i knew, this business could actually change my,life in a real way,so i know 10 000 may sound like a lot,but believe it or not because i was, testing, influencers trying to run ads constantly, buying products constantly buying, packaging i didn't take home,as much as you may think at that time i,was probably taking home only 3 500,of that 10 grand within six months of,running this business,i was beginning to see i could do a six, figure year, and then from there i began taking, classes,on,ads writing captions how to find, influencers, that class alone, scaled my company to a point that's,unimaginable that three thousand dollar, class, probably, made me 700 000 because facebook ads has, become an extensive part of my business, and it can't run without it and from, there, that 10 grand

Better Than Fast Food! Classic Smash Burger Recipe
Better Than Fast Food! Classic Smash Burger Recipe
- Sometimes you want that
traditional fast food,or diner-style burger,,but you wanna make it with
really high-quality ingredients, and really great beef.,Well I'm gonna show you how
to make that burger better.,(gentle music),So, if you're like me,
you're a burger person.,And a thick, juicy pub
burger has its place,,but there's something about a crispy, and luscious smash burger, that really makes me nostalgic, for that fast food style burger.,Don't miss these important steps,to make this the ultimate
fast food style burger.,Let's dive in.,The first thing you're gonna wanna do,is portion out the ground beef.,I'm gonna make double patties,,so I'll need eight
portions for four burgers.,The easiest way to evenly
portion eight balls of beef,is to first divide the total
amount of grind in half,,then continue to divide
the portions in half.,By doing it this way,,it's easy to keep the
portioning fairly consistent, just by estimating the size.,If you have a scale,,you can weigh each portion
to three ounces each.,And since we have a
pound and a half of beef,,you will yield eight portions.,Loosely form them into
balls and refrigerate, while preparing the rest of the
ingredients for the burgers.,Now for a change, rather than
slicing or dicing an onion,,we're gonna grate half of an
onion finely on a box grater.,This results in a nice smooth onion puree, which is important to this sauce.,Mix the grated onion with
mayonnaise, yellow mustard,,hot sauce, and Worcester sauce.,I'm not using ketchup
in this special sauce, because ketchup tends
to have a lot of sugar.,And by using this combination,
it's more savory in nature.,Start with removing any wilted leaves, from your iceberg lettuce,'cause you're just going for crunch.,I like using iceberg lettuce,,especially when it's finely shredded.,It adds that great crunch
and a classic texture,to that fast food style hamburger.,When you're cutting tomatoes,,make sure your knife is crazy sharp,or you can use a serrated blade.,You wanna slice your
tomatoes relatively thin.,You don't wanna end up with tomato slices, that are thicker than
your hamburger patties.,Finally, butter and
toast the hamburger buns, over medium heat.,You'll wanna do this step
before cooking your patties, since the griddle is clean and
free of any hamburger debris.,Also, when your hamburger
patties are done,,you'll want to construct
the burger immediately.,This is a great time to
preheat your griddle.,Because if the griddle is super hot, when you try and toast those buns,,they'll go from golden
to burnt real quick.,Now crank that griddle to high, and time to get smashing those patties.,When you're placing your
balls of beef on that griddle,,make sure to give them plenty of room,,because they'll spread out
a lot when they're smashed.,Using a piece of parchment paper, helps so they don't stick to the spatula, when you're giving them that smash.,I like to use a meat mallet
to put pressure on the spatula,so that I can get the
patties as thin as possible.,these will retai
