Why Puppet Matters

hello welcome to this talk about,automating Network Devices with puppet,my name is davon Hanlon and the product,manager for Network automation at puppet,I'm going to talk about our approach to,networking what's currently available,from puppet to help meet your network,Automation challenges today on our,roadmap for the future to enhance our,capabilities our approach to network,automation is that we must be agentless,by default this means that devices do,not have agents installed on them but,the same agent based management,capability that puppet is known for is,available with network devices we're,also following a standard coding,approach on our modules so that our,content is the same structure and uses,the latest tools such as the puppet,development kit or PDK and the resource,api with puppet modules the user is,abstracted from the interfaces to,devices so that you can manage devices,using the common puppet language,regardless of the device type or,interferes to that device we hope that,this approach to our networking solution,will facilitate greater collaboration,within the community and help strengthen,the puppet offering for the good of our,customers on the wider network,administrator community so in terms of,what already exists we have a number of,modules on the Forge that support,network devices over the last few months,we've released new modules for Cisco IOS,switches and Palo Alto firewalls we also,have new partner modules including those,for Cisco Meraki Cisco ECI controllers,and Lenovo sino switches this year we,also released a number of enhancements,to the Cisco Nexus module to add support,for additional resources that can be,managed this content is complemented,already existing content from many other,vendors such as f5 arista cumulus as you,can see on the slide in front of you in,addition to working on our content we,made a number of enhancements to puppet,device adding support for - - resource,on - - apply commands we also created a,device manager module,help you get up to speed with running,agentless puppet some of our existing,modules currently rely on agents and,they are being migrated to be agentless,at the moment if you're interested in,learning more detail about these,enhancements and our agentless approach,I encourage you to watch Rick Sherman's,live talk from Amsterdam for a deep dive,on our existing capabilities in terms of,our roadmap for the future we've quite a,lot ahead of us from a tactical,perspective we're going to be updating a,number of modules including the Cisco,Nexus module to be agentless will be,adding support for cisco iOS XE switches,cisco Asaf firewalls and also supporting,standards such as net companion it will,also continue to work with our partners,to support them and building content for,their devices in addition to all of this,content work we're also adding support,for custom facts for networked devices,from a more strategic perspective we're,going to be focusing our efforts in,solving the types of probl

Painless Multi-cloud Kubernetes with Puppet

so,uh what i'm writing to talk about,is uh what i'm calling to talk about,is i've dealt with a lot of kubernetes,uh and trying to manage kubernetes in a,whole bunch of different clouds for a,whole bunch of different reasons,uh sometimes you're migrating from one,cloud to another,sometimes your customers demand that you,be in the cloud they're in,sometimes various other cost,benefit analysis requires you to be in,multiple clouds,uh sometimes like with uh,one health company i was working with we,were really focused on one cloud but,another cloud,gave us really cheap uh,gpus for use with their ai platform we,were saving a million dollars a month,so yeah it uh there's lots of different,reasons over your life that you may end,up,with uh kubernetes in a whole bunch of,different clouds,and every one of these cloud,vendors there's really only three these,days,uh but every one of them even some of,the ones i didn't mention here,will sell you a managed kubernetes,that supposedly makes this a lot easier,uh and in in truth if you're fully,invested in one cloud vendor and their,tool set it may be worthwhile for you,however the minute you get into managing,multiple clouds,or if you also have kubernetes in the,enterprise,you're going to find yourself using,completely different tools,and each of those vendors has completely,different assumptions completely,different defaults,it can get so bad you may end up with,completely different devops teams,one for each cloud,i've worked at companies where all of,this is true,it's it's a lot of work uh when i worked,with,box we had tens of thousands of,kubernetes nodes,all locally managed and even there,maintaining heterogeneity was a problem,uh so when you,do this just getting the infrastructure,into place uh and making it available,will take more coordination than you,might expect,people might tell you oh kubernetes,takes away the need for something like,puppet,in the sense of managing a deployed,application,something that puppet has always,somewhat struggled to do,in a lot of cases uh yeah absolutely,some of these tools are much better at,managing microservice deployments,uh than puppet is but all of these tools,require a tremendous amount of,infrastructure,hundreds you know compared to a basic,network setup with you know hardware,nodes,you're talking a 10x factor of,management points,and when you have tens of thousands of,management points to bring up your,infrastructure,puppet becomes completely irreplaceable,there's nothing better for this kind of,stuff,and so rather than investing in each one,of these different,tools where you end up spending,a tremendous amount of time adapting,every tool,to work on each of these and i can tell,you from hands-on experience,you cannot give your developers a,thing in the vendors manage kubernetes,it's just not possible you're going to,end up rewriting your tools,like here's the instructions if you're,going into gcp,here's the instructions if you're going,into aws,there's no way to mak

raise your hand if your company that we,work for is less than 10 years old all,right,between 10 and 20 years old more than 20,years old oh so I have I hope I have the,right audience so as you might know your,businesses exist for a long time and,maybe 10 20 30 years ago you were,deploying some very cool technology at,the time and that cool technology is,still around and people are afraid to to,change it to touch it and probably if,people that did that that time is not,not working at the company anymore so,basically what I would like to say is,that even if in that situation what the,experience that we had over this five,six years doing puppet consultancy is,that those systems are the more critical,ones and especially are the systems,where money is flowing through and,sometimes they're there they need to be,there and there is a lot of money that,it spent to keep them working so I like,to say to some customers that come to us,they said ah we know we want to learn,about containers and all these shiny,things and said well all right cool I'm,going to live to see the day when,someone's going to me and I was are you,running docker and yes that's so what's,cool why are you still doing that that's,going to happen as we move forward or,this digital transformation there is,still a lot of boring stuff around the,world right,but that boring stuff makes a lot of,money to a lot of people and it's very,relevant to keep a lot of business,running it's not because nobody's,talking about it doesn't mean it doesn't,exist it's there we have some financial,coins in Brazil and I guess here the way,it's not that different if you take a,look at the corporation of a bank,there's two exchanging text files I mean,I was talking to a guy there in the,as hell where is the money how are we,going to match the me frame his IBM I,said and how is that saving on disk,sorrows he's a column firing some tests,and stuff like that and I said alright,so you were telling me that I'm one VM,commoner way to putting money on my,account said that pretty much like that,so and we are probably going to they,that's going to be there for a long time,already so I have some lessons to learn,some experiences when all these service,those types of services in systems they,don't see automation and usually they,are left behind the at some point the AC,has a problem so they're called the,legacy right but I mean a legacy should,be reward a cinnamon for for good stuff,not bad stuff so large organizations,your Boeing have to have a lot of,processes and business requirements,especially if your organization works in,a regulated sector so we have a lot of,rules to comply and you cannot just give,up oh you don't have to compile that,anymore that's not going to happen,regulation usually never goes away once,it's there it's going to stay there,forever so you need to keep that working,and compliant and as organizations and,enterprises get bigger and other,companies are bought and they get bigger,and larger it it it get

hello and welcome back to race game,videos my name is hollow and i am joined,today,by dolores the sleeping arrow this is a,puppet summon part of the third category,of summons the puppet summons recently i,covered the dung eater puppet yes you,can make the dung eater be a summon for,you but i was also injured by dolores,here because apparently they infinitely,fire sleep arrows but not just any,arrows the saint trina arrows the ones,that have the most sleep build-up,possible which are a bit awkward and,semi-expensive to run if you're using it,in your own bow essentially this is the,best way to get sleep procs so as you,can see yeah this is a ranged sleep,spamming summon and conceptually that is,very useful in many fights sleep in,general is very powerful for a few,reasons and i don't know it feels,underused to me in many cases once you,sleep at target it's going to provide,you with a free critical hit in the case,of dolores here when i summon them in,they are spamming these sleep arrows out,on the target so i'm able to repeatedly,get critical hits without really earning,it throughout a boss fight sleep is,incredible when it comes to duo boss,fights where you have multiple bosses,attacking you at once you guys will,obviously know about the godskin duo,boss fight because we have to defeat,this boss to progress the main story,it's one of the most hated fights in the,game just because yeah you have two,enemies coming at you at once these guys,man these new elden ring players they,don't know about ornstein and smoe sleep,is essentially a cheat code in that,fight anyway making it a lot easier by,having dolores there's a summon you can,have dolores just sleep one of them or,even both of them which is finally,possible acting as a cc on one of the,targets to make the fight much more,manageable this sleep lasts 60 seconds,which is a very long time in a fight,more than enough as you can see to clear,out one of them before the other even,has a chance of waking up and i found,that dolores has pretty smart ai they,seem to try to make sure they're always,at a medium to far range whenever an,enemy is near to them they begin kind of,spam rolling just getting out of there,as fast as possible to reposition to be,outside of melee distance which is,important for a summon like this even,more intelligent though dolores stops,attacking when their target is sleeping,obviously this would not be nearly as,useful if it just kept going and woke up,the targets that they're sleeping,alongside those satrina arrows for the,fast build up of sleep dolores is,actually using a short bow which allows,them to use the barrage ash of war on,the bow which is perfect for spamming,out shots and applying a status like,this outside of that you've just got,constant tick damage from the quick,shots that they are sending out while,reapplying the next sleep even in the,example where an enemy cannot be true,slept or critically slept it still,serves as a useful effect in even any,duo fight that it c
