welcome to lab 9 today we're going to be,currency which is when a system executes,more than one program at a time there's,more than one function or operation,occurring simultaneously as we'll see in,a little while the definition of,simultaneous here is a little bit blurry,but nevertheless there's some pretty,important lessons in this concept which,is becoming more and more important as,the field continues to advance so we'll,start here at the top as always,reviewing some machine concepts specific,to scratch scratch is a bit of a,different environment than just the,crazy wilderness of a normal computing,environment it protects us from a couple,of issues that come up here but we're,going to talk about those as the lab,progresses so that you get a feel for,what will come once you leave the,scratch environment so this first,exercise outlines three important,concepts that are important to,understand without programming in,scratch or BYOB I actually want to start,with the third one although you're,welcome to peruse through in any order,the third point here is that scratch,does not make use of more than one core,for those of you who may have heard of,multiple multi-core processors this is a,technology that's becoming pretty,prevalent these days that's designed to,allow a single piece of hardware to,execute more than one thing at a time,this obviously allows for some added,efficiencies allows processors to crunch,more numbers and the same amount of time,than it was before,however it also adds it it creates some,pretty serious issues that we have to,consider when we're writing software for,these sorts of chips scratch however,only utilizes one core no matter how,many cores a particular system has if,you have a computer with eight cores in,it for example scratch itself will only,run on one of those cores which is less,efficient but at the same time makes it,a little bit easier to actually write,effective programs so this is an,important thing to keep in mind okay,with that,let's go back to number one it says that,scratch is like a parent with a lot of,kids and the parent wants to give all,its kids equal attention if you have,three things happening at once let's say,three sprites each that do something,when the green flag is clicked then,scratch is going to do what's called,time division multiplexing whoa big term,okay so if we whip out the board for,that the the word is a lot bigger than,the concept so if you have some time,let's say this is one second time,division multiplexing basically is a,technique that slices time into a bunch,of different parts like we've done here,the first part could be set aside for,one process let's say sprite number one,the second part would be sprite number,two third part would be sprite number,three and then the last part would,actually in this case be a process that,redraws the screen so all the sprites up,in the top right corner those all get,redrawn using that fourth bit of time as,you might be able to predict in this,case
