all right hey everybody welcome back to,another episode of unprepared i'm your,host,chase climber today welcome to the show,someone i have known for literally over,10 years uh we both come from music and,now we're in ecom,it's a fun world uh dennis hegstag from,live recover welcome to the show,yo yeah maybe even more than 10 years,but definitely 10 years,and uh warped tour days shout out,myspace yeah that's pretty much that's,where we all,uh cut our teeth was learning how to,design myspace profiles it's probably,like half of the people in the tech,industry these days is what they did,to kind of get i was basing,counter-strike man i swear oh man i'm,still,i'm still a video game nerd but we're,here not to talk about video games but,to talk about,you know kind of the thing that is on,everyone's mind especially with q4,coming up and just,the ways to see returns these days is,sms so,you guys have a really unique solution,over at live recover and we'll talk,about that in a bit,um but i guess let's just kind of get,into,the sms landscape in general and how,that plays,into like how you want to use it in your,marketing stack how do you want to like,where does it play so i think that right,now like you said q4 is coming up things,are getting really expensive on facebook,uh for us our ads are going up like 100,and i hope that's just a pre-election,thing and things calm down but,um for the holidays it's going to be,right like your inbox is flooded with,email,and it's probably going to get flooded,with sms too,just because of the nature of now sms is,a little bit more mature i'd say it's in,like it's sophomore,year of of sort of the direct to,consumer e-commerce sort of growth cycle,but uh last year if you're doing sms for,black friday cyber monday or christmas,you were probably one of the few people,that was breaking through all the noise,this year if you're not you're almost,like that's almost becoming the default,so i would say like,you know sms as a list creation tool is,almost as important to,as email but it's also important to,recognize that like email versus sms in,terms of frequency is not going to be,the same,so don't expect to sign people up on an,sms list and then start texting them,daily,and then hope that by black friday cyber,monday they're still around because they,most likely won't be,right um i know for myself and hopefully,this is for,most people like if i got an email from,wayfair,and i get an email once once a day four,or five times a week,i've probably been subscribed to that,news list for like eight years,and i don't unsubscribe and there's,probably ltv data that says i buy stuff,quarterly so keep blasting me,but i know for a fact that there's no,way any brand could text me at that,frequency with sms,and i would stay um so i think you know,thinking about,maybe ramping up now it's we're at,october so we're getting really close,ramping up now i'm building that list,and sort of nurturing it in the right,way or you're not,you know exhausting

today i want to talk about abandoning,cart recovery and specifically how you,can create a playbook campaign in,autopilot to recover,all those abandoned cars so let's jump,in and take a look,so before we jump into autopilot there's,something we need to take care of,in the shopify account itself first,because we want to set up emails,that will email a customer after they,abandon a cart,but shopify actually already does that,in a really basic way,so in your shopify account you want to,navigate to settings down here,and click on checkout if you scroll down,to the bottom,you'll see under abandoned checkouts is,checked by default generally it says,automatically send abandoned checkout,emails,you want to uncheck that because if you,leave it checked,the customer is going to get one email,from your shopify store,and another email from autopilot and you,don't want that to happen so click save,and we're good to go and we can now,leave shopify,so once you log into your autopilot,account by default on the home screen,you'll have,this dialog that says switch on these,campaigns,and you'll see right at the top is,abandoned cart recovery,and it says 70 of all carts are,abandoned,make more money by automating car,recovery so generally that the,average here is that 70 of,carts on your store will be abandoned so,you're essentially losing,70 percent of this revenue from cards,carter abandoned so if we can just,recover a couple,of basis points of those cards,we're gonna make you a lot more money so,that's our aim today,the beauty is this is really already set,up for you all you need to do is click,from here on abandon cart recovery and,autopilot will automatically build out,the abandoned cart recovery playbook,campaign so you can see it just,automatically built out for us here and,really at this point all you need to do,is switch it on you don't really need to,go and edit anything but i think it's,important we go through and understand,fundamentally how it works,and just some of the additional things,that you can tweak and play with,in here so,it says here people enter when so,the activity is abandoned cart occurs,so shopify doesn't have a,concept of an abandoned cart that we can,pick up here,so what we do is we look at people who,start a checkout and then we wait,90 minutes for them to complete the,checkout,and then if they don't complete the,checkout we fire this activity,in an autopilot called abandoned cart,and so what we're looking for here,is abandoned cart occurs so when the,abandoned cart occurs,uh people will enter our playbook here,so then the second thing we want to do,is make sure that they're exiting,if they place an order so there's some,criteria here,they receive all the messages so they,receive all the emails and they still,don't buy so they're going to leave the,playbook,they don't qualify to receive any,messages within a 30-day period,in this context it's unlikely but it's,still a good rule to have in place,uh or they place an order so if they,receiv

dennis hextad welcome to the show how,are you man i'm excellent man how are,you daniel yeah very well myself um,what's happening in the life of dennis,hextad i know you've been through a,couple of things now i want to touch,upon a few things but i'll see what you,feel like sharing feel like mentioning,what's happening in your life right now,um so it's been uh it's been good,learning a lot of stuff kind of diving,into a lot of new stuff and trying to,expand on things that i have been going,deeper on and so like i spent three,years building a shopify app that we,sold it's been,just over a year and some change since,we sold that business,and that was a,bigger business you know multiple,call it seven figures in annual,recurring revenue whereas,uh since then i took a little time off,uh,maybe six months kind of exploring some,stuff and then i i landed back in,shopify and sas um and so i ended up,buying another shopify app um,at the end of october early november,uh called order bump which does uh in,checkout and post purchase upsells for,for shopify merchants and since then i,you know spent some time growing the,business and building on the product a,little bit uh and now um,in the process of closing on selling,that business as well oh that's lovely,so you got it your body said in october,last year yeah so a couple of months and,you're selling it already,yeah that's good okay what made you say,uh what made you get back into the,shopify eco so we're in the building,ecosystem i guess or back to running a,business what made you it's a bit of a,cliche question but it never gets old,and it shows uh the person's psyche or,what's going on for your mind what made,you just not say you know what i'll just,go live my life i'm not,back to building a business or buying a,running one anymore,i don't know i think,i've never when people are like oh what,do you what's your thing in business i'm,like i think it's just like the creating,and business in general i could it,doesn't matter if it's like shopify sas,or running an e-commerce business or or,starting some real estate potentially,some real estate thing or something else,like i just think you know creating,stuff is fun and for me i i tried to,wait for this like,new inspirational magical idea to come,after selling my company and thinking,that it would come with so much free,time and nothing really did and so uh i,just figured why would i not just jump,right back into the space where i sort,of,feel like i've understand how the,ecosystem works i have a little bit of a,head start in terms of,build a business in the space sold the,business in the space kind of understand,how to how the sale process went,went about so then i could apply that,myself a little bit when i went and,bought another business and so,i almost like by selling a business i,learned how to go buy a business and,then it was more you know the app that i,bought sure i could have probably,you know built it for,you call it less than 25 000 right um,and i en
