Can I translate if it's not my native language? - (Ask a Translator #3)

hi so today's video is in reply to a,question Maya reads wrote and asked can,you talk about translating between two, languages when none of them is your, native language I have a medical, background and I can translate from,German to English in my field but I find,it hard to get a job because neither of,them is my mother tongue I'm going to,discuss this first part translating, between two languages when none of them,is your native language so a couple of,points here first of all I can't help, but wonder why not your native language,so she didn't specify why or why not, there are a couple reasons that I hear, for which people will translate in,different languages if you have a very, rare rare language combination that it,might be harder to find jobs but you can, usually charge more for this,I'm fluent in Ukrainian and Swedish and, there's not much demand for it I'm not, going to get many jobs anytime soon so I,have to do it in different languages but, usually there's a payoff right because,if there's not much demand for Ukrainian,Swedish translations there's also not, much supply so when someone does need a,translation from Ukraine to Swedish or,vice versa or whatever they're willing,to pay quite a bit more than for say,Spanish to English which is a lot more, common or it might be the opposite, someone say well I do Spanish the,English translations but you know it,doesn't pay very well because I'm just, starting out and there's so much, competition that it's hard so I shall, work on save Portuguese it's not my,native tongue but since there's less, supply it actually pays something more, decent and there's more chance that I,can get the job now this is true however, again there's a trade-off right there, might be a lot of competition for,Spanish English translation but there's,also a lot of demand so usually you, should be able to have more opportunity,to get a job these are the two main, reasons that I've heard for which people, don't translate in their native tongue,Maya here didn't specify what her reason, was so let's assume that it's some other, reason I haven't thought of what might, have happened is that this just fell in,her lap so what I would say at this, point is first of all if they fell in,your lap there's probably a reason ie,someone needed them and if they already, need them there's already the demand for,it and they came to you as the supply, any time you get have a translation you,can use that for future translations you,get a rating you get a referral and you,can feature it in your portfolio, anywhere translators cafe pros combi, they give you a segment where you can do,that it fits because it fell in your lap,and you have past experience in this, translation use that to your advantage, every single client you've had hit them,up for a rating review obviously be nice, about it etcetera and preferably do it,soon after your translation so they, remember you once you get these ratings, and reviews then you can definitely use, these for future jobs use your past, clients as

Should You Translate *From* or *Into* Your Native Language?

Should You Translate *From* or *Into* Your Native Language?

hello fellow freelancers I'm back at,least for now I'm still pretty busy but,you know we'll see if I can how often I,could keep doing these videos if I can,get back on schedule today I wanted to,do a video for it so this has to do with,a question I received on my course and,it's a guy who I think he's based in,Russia and he was talking about, basically he asked me he said he's,getting translation jobs but they don't,pay very well because he's based in,Russia and the Russian agencies don't,pay very well at all and and he,translates from English into Russian, however he so he was wondering if he,should change from Russian into English, and try to offer this as a service maybe,to agencies in Europe or in the US or,something like that so he could get paid,a bit more per translation and anyway he,was asking me what I thought about that, and and how to go along with it so I,just want to address this quickly and I,thought I actually had made a video on,this before but I checked and I couldn't,find it so so I guess I haven't although,I'm pretty sure I've at least mentioned,it in passing but the question being if,you do English to Russian translations, should you try to do Russian to English, translations if you think it'll earn you, more the answer is absolutely no you, should not and the reason is well the, reason is you should always be,translating into your native tongue you, should when you translate from two, languages presumably one of them is your, native tongue one of them is one that, you thinking that you feeling that you, grew up with or whatever it might be and,the other one is one that you've learned,or that you've picked up along the way,but either way one of them is more, native than the other that's how it,usually happens that's how it almost, always happens and the more native, tongue is the one you should be,translating into the one that you're,more comfortable with in writing and/or,speaking but especially writing and I,mean you shouldn't switch it up there, are very few exceptions which usually, have more to do with what's being, translated than your level or anything, but you know let me just get into this, now the reason for this is if you think, through it is kind of obvious it's,because when you read something, there's more chance you'll understand no,matter what language as long as it's one,of the languages that you know but when, you write it it has to sound like a,fluent speaker like a native speaker and, this is a lot more attainable if you're,writing already in your native tongue, and so if in fact if you read something, you don't understand it you can take all,the time you want to go to the Internet,to the dictionary to whatever might be,to try to look it up or even ask people, say well what does this mean in this, context does it mean this that and get,all your facts straight and then write, out the translation I mean all, translators do this all the time go to,pros.com go to the forms or translators,cafe.com word reference you know and you,see a bunch of

The secrets of learning a new language | Lýdia Machová
