hey what's going on it's nathan resnick,with sourcify,today we have one of my favorite online,entrepreneurs,dane with eco cart thanks so much for,joining us,thanks nate happy to be here excited,about this so before we dive in i really,want to learn more about you and your,background,and just start there sure absolutely so,um as far as my background is concerned,i've kind of always had the,entrepreneurial bug,um so the last business that i was,involved with and started,was kind of it was an online,peer-to-peer rental marketplace business,so think like,airbnb but instead of renting someone's,home you rent there like surfboard,snowboard drone bike et cetera,um we built the business honestly to be,sustainable from the beginning because,we thought that,um you know renting in stark contrast to,consumption was a far,greater benefit for the environment um,especially as it relates to like high,plastic items kayaks surfboards etc,and so after a while it just became,incredibly complicated and expensive to,be,a sustainable brand and so realized,there was this,massive gap in the market and so once we,kind of um you know,once we were done with that business we,kind of transitioned to,eco cart based on that idea so our our,mission indico card here is to make the,fight against climate change,easy affordable and accessible so,everyone can do their part,that's awesome i love it yes it sounds,like you've been very environmentally,minded throughout your entrepreneurial,journey,and so tell us more about ecocar what do,you guys do exactly,and i mean what brands or what products,are a good fit for you,to work with yeah yeah absolutely so,eco cart today uh like i said our our,mission a little bit a little bit ago,how that looks today is it's simply uh,we wanted to highlight the convenience,of it all and so what ecocard is today,is a shopify app it's a plug-in,that uh integrates right into your store,that off,that plugs in a little calculated check,box at your customers checkout flow,that enables them to opt in to a certain,calculated dollar amount to make their,order carbon neutral,and what we do with that and what that,means and how it works a little,quick uh one minute overview is that we,take a few we look at a few different,factors of the order the specific order,itself like the,um the order weight the shipping,distance to and from the product type,and runs through our algorithm and spits,out a dollar amount for the customer to,opt into generally speaking it's,under a dollar for the customer to opt,in to make their order carbon neutral,and what we do with that is we take that,and we direct it towards certified,carbon offset projects like planting,trees,building wind farms etc got it that,makes a lot of sense,so if someone you know wants to,implement eco car,they just go to the shopify app store,find it and then install it have you,guys,seen like a increase in conversion rate,for,merchants that have installed and have,eco cart on their storefront i mean what,does tha

hey everyone and thanks for tuning in to,another episode of the modern merchant,podcast my name is austin i'm your host,and today we have a special guest this,is dain he is the co-founder of ecocar,dane thanks for jumping on,awesome thanks for having me i'm really,excited to be here perfect you know in,we had a quick little conversation with,jake on your team and we got started and,it was really interesting to know about,eco carton how you guys fit in the state,of uh helping e-commerce sellers with um,diminishing the carbon footprint in the,world and and being on that eco-friendly,train right now that a lot of us are on,board with but,just for all the listeners listening in,today why don't you give us a quick,little background of who ecocard is and,what you guys currently do right now,absolutely yeah of course and and i'm,definitely excited to to be chatting,with with that with you and to uh to be,to be listened to by by everyone here so,um thanks for having me and um yeah in,terms of what we do we are a solution to,calculate and offset the carbon,footprint of e-commerce purchases and so,we partner directly with e-commerce,brands um and not just e-commerce but,you know retail generally across many,different channels to calculate and,offset the car their carbon footprint of,their purchases and we do this in a few,ways,um we,basically our api gets kind of embedded,into the back end of the ecommerce site,for example through a shopify app or a,big commerce app,or we can,find some other way of,implementing our api into your tech,stack generally to ultimately take some,data points of your purchases such as,shipping distance package weights and,product type run those through our,algorithm and then calculate what the,carbon footprint of that purchase was,and then ultimately be able to fund,certified carbon offset projects like,planting trees building wind farms etc,based off of that specific carbon,footprint thus making all of your orders,carbon neutral,and we do so for today right around 2000,companies and so we're powering about 2,000 companies sustainability initiatives,making their orders carbon neutral um,this includes brands like apl adams,barkbox cfa foods june shine,and many many more that we're excited to,partner with so those that's kind of a,little bit of what we do happy to dive,into into any more of that yeah that's,it's super interesting whenever um i,think jake or someone on your team got,in contact with my ceo travis and i got,looped in and um,it was funny man i i've never really,thought about you know the carbon,footprint you know being eco-friendly,from like a purchase standpoint you know,everything that involves the shipping,and logistics all the way to getting,that to the end customer you know we've,got a lot of retailers that sell,eco-friendly goods right grocery that,are just a little bit better for you and,your body you know bath and body stuff,that's that's not you know uh with all,the chemicals in it and things like that,but then

hi there i'm roxy rogan ceo and founder,of wild apparel as a conservationist,running an online business being carbon,neutral was super important to me,unfortunately i found out it could cost,me upwards of five grand a loan in,consulting fees i came across the carbon,neutral card app by carbonclick it's an,e-commerce app that allows customers to,pay an extra two dollars to check out to,make their purchase 100 carbon neutral,adding the carbon neutral card app,actually creates this extra cool feature,in your shopping cart too it was a huge,win for us so i just wanted to share,with you how easy it is to install,before i go through the install process,i just wanted to show you the end result,here in my store and how easy it is for,anyone to single purchase a carbon,offset,so add something to that cart,you then have the option here for the,carbon click two dollars,click that it's going to refresh your,page,open up your cart,and there you have it your two dollar,carbon offset along with your purchase,order and your checkout as per usual,carbon neutral card actually gives my,store the same technology used in big,airline companies like etihad airways,which is really cool,so let's go ahead and install the app,so we click here,so how does the carbon neutral card work,the customer clicks the green button,adding a carbon offset to their cart,then the customer completes their,purchase as normal the customer will,receive confirmation and can see which,projects they're helping support,and then carbonclick will collect,payment from you the shopify owner as,payment for pre-purchase carbon offsets,so it's a very simple process,so let's set you up for automatic,billing so you need to make sure that,your pages are,set up for automatic billing because,every month they need to collect the,funds that your customers paid to then,use for the offsets,so you go start free trial,so i recommend using the default two,dollars contribution it covers nearly,all e-commerce goods and you know the,customers are happy to pay for it it,will also cover making any of our orders,carbon neutral so i'm just going to,choose the two dollars,so i am going to ask them to do it for,me to install it for me so if you are,confident um with coding in your shopify,store you can do it yourself and it will,show you the options of how to do that,if you you're someone like me who,doesn't know a thing about coding not to,worry you can get carbon click to do it,for me they've a really quick turnaround,in this so i'm going to press that,option and go next,then it gives you just a few things that,you need to tell them so you need to add,the climate neutral card to your store,so we need to grant them access,this will take about 24 hours for them,to do this,and here we go,up here it will show you you know 100,how much of your orders with offsets,how much money you've collected the,total amount of co2 offset and we've,only just had installed it so we only,have one climate hero so that will show,you there,how m

happy earth day everyone and to,celebrate the occasion we have an,episode dedicated to sustainability and,environmental consciousness,it's one of the most requested topics,that we get from you our listeners and,what better time to cover it than on,earth day today we have a guest who has,built a business around helping econ,brands reduce their carbon footprint and,operate more sustainably it's my,pleasure to welcome dane baker ceo of,eco cart to the show today,welcome to the show dane,alex i'm really excited to be here thank,you so much for having me,oh it's a pleasure to have you here and,before we go too deep on anything um,obviously i've gotten the background on,eco card i love what you guys are up to,but for listeners maybe a quick,background on what you guys are up to,yeah absolutely so,at eco ecocar our mission is pretty,simple it's to make the fight against,climate change easy affordable and,accessible so that everyone can do their,part and really what that what that,means in practice is we've developed an,e-commerce app that plugs right into,your ecommerce store populates a check,box at your customers checkout flow for,them to add a few extra cents um and opt,in to a carbon neutral order and with,that we then fund certified carbon,offset projects like planting trees,building wind farms sustainable,agriculture et cetera which,ultimately nets out or balances out the,carbon footprint that is created by your,particular order and so that's kind of,what ecocard is in in short um we have,over 500 brands that are using ecocar,today and and uh really excited about,what uh what we have in front of us,that's amazing and,building a tool like this like i feel,like this isn't something that you just,kind of like build on a whim there's got,to be some sort of backstory here for,like why build why build an app for,e-commerce like this,absolutely yeah um so really it all kind,of started um with my my current,co-founder and i we had we were building,a prior business and and we built the,the business um it was an online,peer-to-peer rental marketplace business,so kind of thing like airbnb but for,like surfboards kayaks snowboards etc we,built the business really because we,thought that renting in contrast to,consumption was a greater net benefit,for the environment especially as it,relates to these high plastic items like,i mentioned ultimately as we scaled it,became incredibly complicated and,expensive to maintain the sustainability,rigor and ethos um and and so you know,ultimately we,uh and we tried everything right we,tried to you know hire consultants to,kind of audit our operations and our,processes we tried to buy offsets,ourselves everything was very,complicated very expensive um to,navigate,and ultimately um you know we all we,kind of lived the issue we lived the,problem and we you know kind of had this,idea always in the back of our mind from,that point and you know spent a little,bit of time you know uh,in venture afterwards uh after that,experienc
