What is Continuous Integration?

Hi, I'm Eric Minick with IBM Cloud.,I want to tell you a little bit about continuous integration today.,This is a development practice,that just about everybody thinks they're doing,,but it's widely misunderstood.,So, I want to start by talking about the bad old days before we had it,,what problem we're trying to solve,,and what this does for us and what it's really about.,So, let's start with our old school approach,where we've got a couple of developers,,they're probably on a team of 30 or 50,,we got Alice and Bob and they're working on their own features,,and they're going to keep separate on their own features for a long time.,They're writing some bits of new code here.,Maybe they're deleting a line of code here or there, what have you.,And their plan is that they're going to get their features to work against the code base,,then in a couple of weeks, or months, later,they're going to integrate their work together.,They're going to merge their work together.,They're going to say:,"My code, your code, it's got to come together, it's all got to work".,Now, in this world,,you could have a situation where Alice & Bob, they changed the same line of code here, right?,And maybe Alice changed this code, but then Bob deleted it.,And so, this gets really awkward, really fast when you just try to algorithmically combine it.,You get what's known as a merge conflict.,This gets worse because it might be that some code up here,,interferes with some code down here,,they just don't work together and you've got bugs.,And this will happen here within just one file,,but in the real world,,it's not just two developers working on the same file,it's thousands of files, or millions, in an application.,There's tens of developers involved,and they're doing this over weeks and weeks.,And so, reconciling all of these problems, it's big mess.,It's called "merge hell".,And so, they say, "What do we do to avoid merge hell? This is how we got here".,Well, we start, and we'll have Alice writing some code again, right?,Alice writes her code.,Cool. As soon as she has something that works even a little bit, her feature is not done,,but she's got code that works, it doesn't break things.,She submits that in the source control, Bob pulls down the same code,before he starts working, right?,He always is working off the latest.,Alice is always submitting hers in.,Bob makes his change right?,Maybe he deletes a line of code, great.,Alice comes back, she's working another part of a feature, she's working on another feature,,she grabs Bob's code. Cool.,And now they're working on these things together.,And the likelihood that they're both working on the same thing, at the same time,,and that they conflict is pretty small.,And if they do hit that, it's all on code they've worked on in the last day, right?,they can sit together, they can reconcile this thing, it's no big deal.,And so, the core principle that we're seeing here,,one of my favorite things in software development, because it i

I Was out doing a delivery one late night. It was probably the longest drive I have ever taken for a pizza delivery,From the pizza place I worked at it was a 20-minute drive. Which isn't too crazy out where I live.,Plus they ordered four large pies, so I figured it was a party and I would get a much bigger tip.,Navigating the dirt roads at night was always annoying though. I pulled up to the given address.,It was some old sketchy looking building literally in the middle of a forest clearing.,There were no cars parked anywhere or any lights on.,I put my car in park and called my boss.,I asked him to reread the address at least three times to make sure I typed it in right, but that checked out.,I could tell he was in a really bitchy mood, and he told me to at least knock on the door and check it out,He would normally get mad if we took back one pie,But I was afraid of what he would do if I brought back four.,I was insanely unnerved but got out anyway and forced myself to the front door of the building,There was no doorbell, so I just knocked really hard,I heard nothing and didn't really expect to hear anything.,I was extremely disappointed,not because nobody answered the door, but because I was realizing that it was all a waste of time and gas.,I knocked one more time out of desperation,and then began to hear some kind of rustling noises from inside of the building.,I knocked again and yelled that I was the pizza guy. There was silence now,I felt a bit more uncomfortable now than before,,but before I could turn around,I noticed something at the window.,There was someone looking through the window.,I couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman, all I noticed were their eyes,Their eyes were opened wider than I knew possible.,Staring intently at me.,I was disturbed enough by this and dropped the pizzas and ran back to my car,The shitty thing wouldn't start until turning the key for the third time.,I drove off the grass and back onto the dirt road, but I felt the car rocking about shaking and bumping,Something wasn't right.,I didn't make it far from the building before I started hearing a sharp scraping sound coming from outside,There was so much resistance that I couldn't even drive. The car came to a stop,I got out of the car to check what the hell was wrong,A chill ran up my spine as I began to feel like my heart was constantly skipping beats,My tires had been slashed and had completely fallen off the rim,Not just the front though... all four tires were slashed,I realized somebody did this when I was knocking on the door to that building,Instead of running, I got back in the car and locked the doors,I was so close to that building I could practically see it from where I was if it weren't for the trees blocking the view,I dialed 911 and explained everything to the operator,She told me the cops would be over as soon as possible and that I need to stay hidden,I asked her if it was advisable to stay in the car or run,And she told me it would be best to sta

3 Disturbing Food Delivery Horror Stories (Vol. 3)

being a delivery driver for several,pizza places a few years back I had a,lot of experiences with weird customers,or just strange things that would happen,at night,but this one night takes the prize for,the most disturbing and unusual,situation,I had been working at the specific chain,pizza shop for just under a year,I worked mid shifts and night shifts,alongside one other co-worker for the,most part,it would stay busy basically up until,closing at 2 am so there wasn't a ton of,time to mess around especially since it,was just the two of us,I'll call my co-worker Tom to keep his,privacy,Tom was older than me by a few years and,was a quiet hard worker,he was in charge during the night shifts,and would make all the pizzas while I,would deliver them both of us would,answer calls though depending on who was,busy and who wasn't,anyway it was just past 11 pm and I had,gotten back from a delivery when the,phone rang,seeing Tom in the middle of making a,pizza I picked up the phone,a man on the other line spoke asking for,a large sausage pizza,I put in the order and asked if he,needed anything else the man didn't,answer for a moment then he repeated,himself saying that he'd like a large,sausage pizza,this time I could tell through the way,he mumbled it out that he was likely,drunk,I confirmed that he just wanted one,pizza and the man said yes,I sent the order through then grab my,next delivery and dropped it off,getting back to the shop Tom had,finished the guy's order and prepped it,for delivery so I grabbed it off the,counter ran to my car,I noticed as I was grabbing the order,though Tom was giving me a weird look as,if he wanted to say something to me but,he decided not to,again though Tom was pretty quiet and,soft-spoken so it wasn't very odd,the address was a good 15 minutes away,but there was no traffic at this time so,I got there pretty early,the house was normal but had a lot of,land on either side with the neighbor's,homes barely visible through the trees,I got out and went around to the,passenger door to pick up the pizza then,I headed up to the porch and knocked on,the door,a few seconds later a man came and,opened the door wide open,this wasn't all that strange but I,always found it odd when people would,open their door that wide as it was just,unnecessary but his face when he saw me,seemed very confused and surprised as if,he hadn't expected to see me,figuring he was just drunk and out of it,I handed him the box and told him his,total to which he slowly and awkwardly,handed me cash not saying anything,he held the box of pizza while standing,in front of me and looked at it with a,strange intensity,then he moved his eyes up towards me but,not at me he was looking over my,shoulder like he saw something but was,just staring at it with that same,intensity before shaking his head slowly,like he was saying no,getting really uncomfortable watching,this man I couldn't help but look back,I turned my head over my right shoulder,and looked toward the driv

welcome back aliens my name is 720 and,in this video we'll talk about C I / CD,now this concept is very hot in the,industry Elton is talking about this,concept now especially if you are,working on day offs it's amazing but,what is it and why it's amazing now,before understanding this concept let's,understand why it came so let's go back,few years and let's talk about waterfall,model so what we do is let's say if you,have a client and if your client says,hey we want we want you to build a,project now in this case it will take,some time for you to make a project,right maybe six months maybe one year,maybe five years now in this case you,cannot simply ask your client hey a,client just wait for one year we will,give the project because things are,changing very fast now right so your,client cannot wait for it because client,have client requirement might change or,maybe there is some miscommunication so,client is asking for something else and,you are giving something else so you,need that continuous feedback right and,that's why we are using a different,approach nowadays which is a child so in,a child what you have what you are,responsible is to give your client as a,ready product in every two to three,weeks okay not the entire product but,then the parts of it so let's say if you,have 10 features you can give one,feature in two weeks or three weeks now,that will be amazing from a client side,because you will get a continuous,feedback okay that's one thing so we,have one thing which is agile the second,thing here is now let's say Milan you're,working on a project and in that project,you have certain modules and you have,multiple developers to work on it so,what you have done done is they have,given one module to each developer now,the thing is when you as a software,developer work on a project let's say,you are using Java here so you will,write a Java code and you are also,responsible to test it and for testing,you will be using j-unit right now when,you test your class it is perfectly,working so your unit testing is working,perfectly but then we are we miss one,thing in testing we have one more thing,which is called as integration testing,because all this developers they work,they will work together right,and when they work together they have to,integrate it somewhere so that your,operation thinks because we have,development teams we have operation,teams and we have a QA team now your,operation teams are responsible to you,know take that project and deploy it on,server but then you have missed that,intention testing right who is is,possible to do that so what we have is,we have this automation test things so,so let's say this is Friday evening and,you have decided okay so we'll work for,one week and every Friday we will deploy,the project we will integrate the,project and then there will be an,automation test what if something goes,wrong in the automation test,what if there's up there are bugs so the,problem is this is fighting evening you,don't you wa
