The Psychology of Career Decisions | Sharon Belden Castonguay | TEDxWesleyanU
recently I was forced to assume an,alternate identity started with this, cane I suffered a knee injury and while,I will soon have surgery and be able to,walk normally again my orthopedist, assures me that my running days are over, now for those of you who only run when, chased you may be thinking what a stroke,of luck a doctor sanctioned excuse not,to work out but since taking up running, after college it's become more than just,a pastime for me but part of who I am,Runner has become one of my identities, and giving up that identity has turned, out to be more painful than the injury, itself now like everybody I have a lot,of identities I am a woman a mother an,American a proud native of Rhode Island,I've had a number of professional, identities in my life tour guide can't,counselor schoolteacher graduate student,in developmental psychology podcast host, career counselor and it is through my,career counseling practice that I've,come to recognize how personal, identities can affect and create, professional identities I'm going to,talk a little bit more about how and why, this is so but first I'd like to address, why it's important according to Gallup,eighty-seven percent of employees, worldwide are not engaged in their work, there are a lot of people who study this, phenomenon largely because it has a,pretty substantial effect on the bottom, line, now the organizations and consultants, that study this tend to look at the, external factors for why people are not, engaged things like office culture or,wages as a career counselor I'm more, interested in internal reasons like why, someone shows a particular line of work,in the first place and my field of,career development has looked, somewhat differently over time of course, throughout much of human history people, didn't actually choose a line of work, you basically did whatever your parents, did and what you did for a living was, prescribed by where you were from your, gender and your social class but during, the first and second industrial, revolutions as people started moving, from the farms into the cities the world,of work broadened and the very first, career counseling open office opened in,1908 the vocational Bureau was located,in Boston's North End neighborhood and, served the local community free of,charge to help them navigate this new, world of work they interviewed them, extensively about their backgrounds, skills and interest and provided, background about local employers now, obviously this wasn't a particularly, widespread phenomenon but the military, started to take an interest in their, work they needed to figure out a way of,putting workers placed into jobs to help, serve the war efforts during World War,one in World War two,and by the Second World War they had a,lot of psychologists that they had hired,to develop tests specifically for this, purpose some of these tests are actually, still used today in various forms and,it's possible that some of you have, taken them maybe through a high school, guidance counselor through an empl

How to master recruiting | Mads Faurholt-Jorgensen | TEDxWarwick
what a fantastic introduction thank you, very much,so over the next 15 minutes I'm going to,talk exactly about what we said before, which is I'm gonna talk about one of the, most important things for any leader to,be good at actually gonna argue it's the, most important thing for any leader and,CEO to be good at the interesting thing, with this particular subject is that, nobody teaches as anything about it it's,actually really hard to find any books,on the topic it's really hard to find a,university course on the topic it's,really hard to actually find any TED,talk on the topic but before I tell you, about what I'm gonna talk about I'm,going to talk about a guy called,Benjamin sander now Benjamin sander is,the conductor for the Boston,Philharmonic Alec Esther now the Boston,Philharmonic Orchestra if you don't know,it is one of the best orchestras in the, world now Ben is one day standing on,stage on his podium conducting his, orchestra of about a hundred people and,he's realizing at that point in time, that out of the hundred people in the, orchestra Ben is the only person who, doesn't have a sound and is the only, person who doesn't have a sound does, that mean you can't hear Ben no of,course not of course you can hear him,you can hear him how he delivers through, other people you can hear him through, how he's selected people to be in his, orchestra now many people have very, advanced ideas of a leadership it but I,think Ben nails it pretty damn well in,that sentence there really for us,leadership and our very simplistic way, comes down to two things it's about, setting the right team setting the best, team that you can for your company your, organization whatever part of your life,it is and this is about helping those, people to achieve the results that is,going to make them successful in that, particular role that's it now I was, introduced before and very often I am,introduced as an entrepreneur or I'm,introduced as a CEO and the reason for, that is I've been part and lucky enough,to co-found over 20 companies with, absolutely amazing people people who are, extremely smart and who I will make, success to but really I don't consider, myself a CEO I don't consider myself an,entrepreneur I consider myself a,recruiter that's it,my job and my role is to find the right, people if I find the right people and I,select the right people my job is really, really simple,if I don't select the right people my,life is very complicated now we all know, this when we have a great team and we've,selected the right people for our team, our life looks something like this maybe, not quite something like it but the fact,is we're not creative selecting people, and it's they're very very good reasons, for it there are no subjects in,university as I mentioned earlier on the, topic when we become a leader in an,organization our boss doesn't take us,aside and says Mass now I'm going to,teach you the secret of how you select, the right people for your team we just, assume that people are going to be great,at

do you want to take your first steps, into creating dynamic websites with, elemental pro but you don't want to,spend a boatload of cash on all those, shiny plugins you may think you need, maybe you just wanted to learn the, basics and see if it's for you without, breaking in the bank well it's a days, tutorial I'm going to take you through a,simple use case will be creating a job, list in section on the architects, website that I showed you how to build,in a recent full build tutorial if you, haven't seen that you'd like to take a,look at it I'll drop a link in the, description below so you can check that, out and get up to speed with what I'm,talking about for this tutorial, apart from the need for elemental pro,all of the other tools we'll be using, are completely free and should help you,get a long way down the road to building, more dynamic WordPress websites now if,you're ready to get your learning cap on,grab your favorite drink and let's jump,in and take a look at what we'll be,building and then we'll take a quick, look at the tools we'll be using for, this particular tutorial so let's kick, this off by taking a quick look at what,we got actually going to create in this, tutorial so I'm Michael my architect, site and we've got a new section called, positions and this is just where you can, take a look at any roles that may be,available so I'm going to open up the, positions option and inside there you,can see currently there are three, different roles available we can click, and go through and take a look at the, individual item so you can see we can, come back out and take a look at the, next role everything is all set up and, configured all nicely we can filter, these out or we can search so there are,a big company with a lot of different, roles available then we could take a,look at search in or we could just come,in and we can say we want to fill these, based upon design for example and then,we'll see we're only seeing the design, orientated job roles now the thing with, this is this is a very simplistic way of,setting things up and we are using just, free tools over and above what elemental,Pro gives us so there are going to be,some limitations for example with the, searching and filtering we are fairly, limited to how we can set things up,inside there there's no Ajax involved in,other words we have to click hit the, submit button and then we'll get, redirected to a different page where it,will filter information out so you are, working with some limit,if you want the full sort of full fat, version of this then the pro version of,one or two of these plugins may be,something you'd want to look at but we,can still get a lot done with these free, tools so let's take a look at how we'd,create this so what tools are we going,to be using well first of all we use in,advance custom fields this is the free, version not the pro version so there are, again like I say a couple of limitations, inside there we can't use things like, repeater regions and so on but we don't,realistically need th

Being a Professional Writer
Being a Professional Writer
what's it like being a professional, writer, well I'm tempted to say it's like, sorting through a tub of building blocks,or finding your way out of the woods, with some other daunting task but no,metaphor can do it justice really, because writing professionally is,discovery and doubt and delusion and, relief and achievement basically being a,professional writer is really fun so,here's my writing process more or less, first off the vast majority of my work, day is not spent clacking away at some, computer keyboard it's spent thinking, thinking about the next word and why I,want to say it thinking about whether, the sentence I just wrote sounds good, and while I think I'll stare out the, window or at the i-beams on the ceiling, until something worthwhile pops into my,brain,so once I've researched and organized my,ideas I start writing on the computer, now this is usually the point where I,convince myself that this assignment, will be a breeze and thanks to the, incredible ideas pouring forth from my,brain I'm also convinced that my writing, will be amazing overall I'm feeling good, then I read over my first draft and I,have to confront reality so my draft is,passable sure and one or two parts may, even be decent but most of it is,incoherent and clumsy this sentence, doesn't make any sense, that whole paragraph is irrelevant the, draft is a mess and I'm worried that I,don't know how to fix it,writing is a solitary job and self-doubt,can quickly turn that solitude and, isolation, especially when I'm lost in this, labyrinth of broken words and it feels, like I'll be working on this thing for,the next decade this is when I have to,remind myself that it's okay if the, first draft is ugly and hard to follow, first drafts are meant for exploration, experimentation their starting points, nothing more so I start fixing it little,by little and eventually I can't spot, any more problems when I submit the, draft of my editor I'm optimistic again,I have climbed out of the valley I have, triumphed over my doubt and my work is,done well actually no it's not I get the, feedback from my editor and turns out,I've still got plenty of work to do,sometimes a few things need to be added,or changed and other times the entire, assignment needs to be reworked from top,to bottom don't usually tries to creep, back over me while I review the, constructive criticism but I've got to,remember that feedback is meant to boost,my writing not serve my ego I need to,hear it when the revisions are finished, and submitted it's kind of a relief, really and it's only then that I can, look back on my work and say you know, that's not bad writing for a living can,be tedious and stressful at times sure, sometimes I can't think of what to say, sometimes my self-doubt tries to run the, show and these feelings come with the, territory but those difficulties are, nothing compared to how much I adore, this job I mean my workday consists of,thinking and exploring and creating and, staring at the ceiling and challenging, myself over and over and

The Perils of the Professional Creator's Journey
The Perils of the Professional Creator's Journey
foreign, led by a PhD physicist and a PhD,neuroscientist is backing our Channel, now and they've asked me to make a white, paper video, and with this white paper video These, phds tell me they will be able to go out,and raise some green paper, lots and lots of green paper, and this white paper video is supposed,to explain why it's a good idea to give, our Channel lots and lots of green paper,so what is a white paper,a white paper helps an audience, understand an issue make a decision and, solve a problem and this white paper our, white paper aims to explain the issue of,the chasm between artistic success and, financial stability, foreign, that artist is a semi-dirty word so I'll,just call us creators which is slightly, less gross, many professional creators start out, like other kids in their cohort they, probably go to elementary school, probably go to high school maybe go to,college but probably don't do that well, maybe they moved to a big city to find, their medium and maybe they find it,and once they've found their medium many, creators become driven by one thing, the desire to make better work,so they work and they get lucky, and they achieve creative success they, like what they're doing and others like, what they're doing they are drawn to do,better work until they reach the chasm, the chasm between creative success and, financial success,a Chasm filled with a red sea of bills, debt and financial responsibility across, which lies the green land of Financial,Security, and better work,so he thinks, how to cross this Chasm and continue to,make better work, some choose the advertising industry and, channel their creativity into making, advertising and money, some choose a drug-fueled struggle Into,Obscurity disaster and or death, some choose martyrdom,or Academia or teaching, maybe Corporate America with her health, care benefits paid vacations and, retirement plans, perfect for raising good children, and creative people achieve too much, financial success too young or too early, foreign, with the help of others, build a little boat, and row across the chasm and the Red Sea,of expenses bills debt, and financial responsibility, and we find that there are many chasms, and Red Waters of bills debt and, financial responsibilities and that a,lot of our work goes into maintaining, our boat but we do the work and have, faith, and sometimes somehow, our work touches the powers that be,and the powers that be why they have, everything we could need to cross the,red waterways on our journey towards, better work, here is Fred Rogers in 1969 asking the, world's richest powers that be the,United States Senate, for funds to support the growth of A New,Concept, national public television, funds to provide safe passage across the,red waterways for the rest of his career, all right Rogers you got the floor,Senator Pastore my first Children's,Program was on WQED 15 years ago and its, budget was 30 dollars, now with the help of the Sears Roebuck, foundation and National educational, television as well as,all of the Affiliated s

How to know if it’s time to change careers | The Way We Work, a TED series
Reem Aly
