5 Design Tips for Better Excel Reports & Dashboards

in this video I'm going to share with,you five of my favorite design tips when,I create Excel reports and Excel,dashboards it's a part of my upcoming,online Excel dashboard course and I'm,going to put the link to it in the,descriptions below so make sure you,check it out to see if it's something,for you,designing dashboards involves making,decisions about what data to emphasize,which in turn depends on the message,that you want to communicate the,following design principles are going to,help you showcase the information as,clearly and directly as possible,number one is contrast contrast creates,emphasis so you may want to add a strong,contrast for headings to communicate,really fast the KPIs that are on display,in your dashboard for larger or longer,tables you could even use a subtle,contrast on the table rows as a visual,aid to help the reader connect the,numbers they see on the right-hand side,to the correct category labels they see,on the left hand side,number two is alignment alignments,connects different elements so use it to,show relationships so in this case the,change to previous year has been aligned,to a center line so either left of the,center line for decrease and right of,the line for increase so the viewer,should logically deduce that the center,line is previous year and left or right,reflects a negative or positive change,from previous year so using layout in,addition to color to communicate in this,case loss or gives makes this more,legible from a distance and also more,quantifiable for tables numbers in a,table should be right aligned in their,cells so you can immediately tell larger,or smaller numbers apart the general,convention is to align numbers to the,right and text to the left all the table,headers can be an exception it's really,based on your preference how you think,looks best in your table number three is,rapid,repetition encourages the brain to draw,parallels and create associations for,example abbreviations should be,standardized throughout the report color,usage should be standardized throughout,the report also the common visual,shorthand of a down red arrow and a,green up arrow is in this example,repeated in the table each time,positioned next to a minus percentage or,a plus percentage so using these icons,in addition to color eases the,readability from a distance so the,viewer can visually filter high,performing or low performing companies,before even going up close to examine,the details,number four is proximity proximity,organizes content,it creates focal points another way of,looking at proximity is grouping its,opposite is separation so this example,shows the metric percentage change the,previous year grouped with its visual,just a conditionally formatted bar chart,to imply that they are connected and the,whitespace separates this set from,another metric which is the percentage,change the budget and its visual for the,use of proximity helps clarity and it,also adds visual punctuation to what,would otherwise be

welcome to better police reports I'm,Jean Reynolds,today's topic is professional sentences,over the years I've heard many police,officers say they wish they had a more,extensive background in English grammar,usage well there's good news because,police reports are such a specialized,form of writing you can predict many of,the sentence and punctuation issues,you're going to run into that means you,can prepare for them and that should,build your confidence so today I'm going,to give you some concepts and strategies,for writing professional sentences and,punctuating them now if you're planning,to write say a Pulitzer Prize winning,novel you're going to need a more,extensive toolbox but think about this,police reports are supposed to be,efficient and straightforward that means,you don't want a lot of fancy sentence,patterns so everything I'm going to give,you today is quick practical and jargon,free let's get started I'd like you to,read this example and decide how to,punctuate it and it's not a trick,question well obviously you're going to,put a period at the end there's no need,to put a comma because this goes,straight from the beginning to the end,he ran into the wooded area across the,street now if I ask you why you put the,period there that seems like a very,simple question right it's a sentence,but how do you know it's a sentence and,this is where a lot of professional,writers including police officers,sometimes run into problems you've got a,group of words it got many groups of,words some are small some large how do,you know what you need a comma or a,period how do you know whether it's,really a sentence when I was in school,my teachers used to say to me that a,sentence was a group of words expressing,a complete thought well when I started,teaching I discovered that that,definition didn't,work very well in fact it confused my,students especially the idea of what is,complete for example somebody would say,we don't know who he is we don't know,what the street is yet its complete it's,a sentence so I began searching for a,definition that worked better and the,definition I came up with is also very,good for police reports and this is what,it is,a sentence is a group of words that,begin with a person place or thing the,minute you see that word he at the,beginning you know that you've got a,sentence that's going to end with a,period now in your Pulitzer Prize,winning novel this isn't going to work,for every variation that you use but,this works great for police reports,because think about this in a police,report you want to start most of your,sentences with a person plays your thing,in fact usually a person you're telling,what you did so it starts with I or what,another officer did or a victim or a,suspect or a witness when I started,working as an English teacher I used to,call these independent clauses and I,found that that confused my students as,well their sentences why not call them,that so hold on to that thought because,we're going to need it a

better police reports building your,brain power,i'm gene reynolds,i wrote criminal justice report writing,i'm a trainer and consultant as well as,the author of 11 books i've helped many,cadets officers instructors and,administrators solve problems with,report writing,my background includes teaching english,in college classrooms,and studying language theory in graduate,school,i have two important messages for you,today one,you know more about writing than you,think you do,two,sharpening your writing skills is easier,than you might expect,let's talk about police reports,you already know that police reports are,important,they help solve crimes and prosecute,criminals,but perhaps you don't feel confident,about writing that's true of many cadets,so i'm going to talk about a resource,you might not have thought much about,your brain,your brain has 86 billion neurons,many of them are devoted to language,the language circuitry in your brain is,incredibly complex,and it's been developing since you were,born,what was the first language you learned,as a child,whether it was english or another,language,it shares a foundation with all other,languages,every language has a systematic,structure,a large storehouse of vocabulary words,the capability to express complex,information and ideas,now think about how you learn to speak,no one sat you down with a grammar,textbook you figured it out yourself,you listen to other people talk,and then you try doing the same thing,yourself,no matter what language you're using,your amazing brain efficiently deals,with intricate language structures all,the time,now that you understand the power of,those 86 billion neurons,you can see why your brain holds the key,to better writing,what many people don't realize is that,neurons can change,this picture represents ordinary neurons,and this picture shows the result of,learning,neurons pair up and connect to one,another,when you stimulate your brain,it responds by organizing neurons and,making new connections,the learning process can feel,uncomfortable even scary,while your neurons are on the move,but when your brain makes the,connections you feel great,how can you stimulate your brain,through active learning,something that happens all the time in,your academy training,practicing new skills stimulates the,neurons in your brain to organize,themselves and make connections,when you complete your academy training,you will have a better brain,it's just as important to know the kinds,of learning that don't build a better,brain,sitting quietly while someone else is,talking may not do much to stimulate,your brain,of course you can acquire a lot of,information from a speaker or teacher,but if your goal is a better brain you,also need to plan many active learning,projects,here's the good news,your report writing classes will include,many tasks designed to stimulate your,brain,you'll be talking with other students,performing a variety of writing tasks,reading,and using your thinking skills to tack

Singapore’s Changi Airport has been ranked the world’s best for seven years in a row now.,But just because it’s at the top, doesn’t mean it’s staying comfortable.,It’s called Jewel, it’s a nearly $1.3 billion dollar project which connects,three of the four terminals at Singapore’s Changi Airport.,It aims to increase the number of passengers coming to Singapore for both visits and stopovers.,It’s even being dubbed a destination for the locals, too.,And maybe that’s not so crazy, considering it also boasts its own movie theater and grocery store.,But if you come to this airport for just a layover, well, you will need to clear immigration to enter this dome.,Unless...,Say you have a stopover at the airport, but you don’t want to go through immigration?,Well, this train allows you to hop onboard and go right through the Jewel,so you can experience it without actually getting off.,By riding on one of these trains, you can experience Jewel, without technically ever entering Singapore.,So what exactly is this place, which feels like an airport, a tourist attraction,,and a gigantic mall, all combined into one?,Jewel builds on Singapore’s goal of being a "City in a Garden.",Here are the three elements that make Jewel unique.,Number one, the HSBC Rain Vortex.,This is where the water originates, it goes down through this funnel which then creates the vortex.,The total length of the waterfall is more than 130 feet,,making it the largest indoor waterfall in the world.,Jewel is comprised of five floors above ground and five floors below ground.,I’m standing two floors below ground right now and this is actually the base of the waterfall,,which goes inside the glass. Wells Fargo reports better-than-expected Q3 revenue

let's get back to the banks JP Morgan,and Wells Fargo let's get more reaction,to those numbers Leslie picker joins us,now again rejoins us hi Leslie,Hey Joe well some merger activities,should serve uh at least JP Morgan,pretty well here because they did see,their Investment Banking Revenue drop,during the quarter as the entire,entirety of Wall Street essentially but,just to kind of dig in a little bit more,on Wells Fargo as I mentioned earlier,this has been the standout performer,this year obviously trading below book,but has been you know outperforming the,other large Banks and you can see their,Shares are up more than two percent this,morning part of the reason behind the,bullishness surrounding Wells Fargo is,its liquidity position its ability to,redistribute Capital to shareholders and,they say in the third quarter they,increase their common stock dividend by,20 and their cet1 ratio which is a,measure of Health in the bank was 10.3,percent that's 110 basis points above,their current regulatory minimum,including buffers so Capital levels,they say they'll be prepared for a wide,range of scenarios including a slowing,economy and Market volatility another,key play here is Wells Fargo is much,more of a pure play on the rising,interest rate environment so you can see,during the quarter net interest income,was of 36 from the year ago quarter,that's largely based on higher rates,higher loan balances now here's the,question on nii that a lot of analysts,and investors are asking is when you can,see that inflection point have rates,driven risen to a level that those,benefits will start to taper off a,little bit and you can see deposits down,there loans are up their provisioned for,credit losses in the third quarter and,2022 included about 385 million dollar,increase in the allowance for credit,losses reflecting loan growth and a less,favorable economic environment so you,start to see different elements of kind,of this nii trend that they've enjoyed,so much this year how is that shifting,as we start to reach a threshold that I,think many people didn't see possible,with regard to where the FED funds rates,will go will it be Beyond four percent,and if so how does that impact kind of,the nii the margins that these banks,have enjoyed all year,kind of like life Leslie they get the,you know if it were a nice yield curve,be great for them but then you got to,offset you know I guess you offset the,potential slowdown and credit losses,with the higher rates so it's uh,something wins out but today at least it,it didn't disappoint even after those,big gains so far didn't this point after,those big gains this the soccer saw,yesterday,and that tells you something too because,obviously with the big gains we saw,yesterday I thought it would take you,know,quite a big beat or quite a a lot of,um you know Improvement in order for,these stocks to to rally on their,earnings but you can see there they're,up pretty significantly on at least Top,Line beats for each of them and
