you might have heard in the news about,firms issuing large stock buyback,programs they'll often announce and say,okay we're going to buy back uh 30,million dollars of our own stock but but,that begs the question of well why would,they do this what is going on here why,would a firm repurchase,its own shares what what is going on,here well one reason uh might be that,the firm needs the shares uh maybe it,needs some kind of needs them available,uh for some stock option programs that,it gave to its executives,so they're going to need some stock on,hand in case the executives decide to,cash in,uh you know those those options and so,they the company decides oh well we need,to make sure we got 500 000 shares and,we'll go ahead and buy them um so so,that's one thing another thing it might,be that the firm decides oh well we want,to go and do an acquisition uh and we,want to use our own shares we're gonna,instead of issuing more shares and,diluting uh the ones are currently out,there we're gonna we're gonna finance,this acquisition with shares but we're,gonna go and buy back some shares and,use those so these these are a couple,reasons but but there are some other,reasons that are are kind of more,strategic uh the the you know the firm's,got kind of maybe a real deep plan uh,with with what it's doing so let's think,about this one is the firm might be,trying to send some kind of signal,signal to the market that the firm is,undervalued,so you got to remember that the firm has,inside information,that an investor does not have now,investors can go and do research and so,forth but ultimately they don't know,everything that's going on in the firm,they don't know all the projects the,firm the people within the firm,they know they have all the information,they know what,they have a pretty good idea compared to,investor what's going to happen in the,future they have more knowledge inside,the firm than exists outside the firm so,if the firm and by the firm i mean like,the the officers of the firm if they're,actually saying okay well we need to go,out and and have the firm uh purchase,some of its own shares well well that's,a signal because you're giving up assets,you're giving up cash,so that makes it kind of a credible,signal,right people will believe it you're,sacrificing assets you're giving up cash,because you have some knowledge about,the future that you believe is positive,so if you thought things were terrible,if you thought things were just you,awful at the firm you wouldn't you,wouldn't be sending this signal you,wouldn't be by saying oh let's give up,our cash,and let's let's go buy some stock uh you,absolutely wouldn't be doing that so,you're sending kind of this credible,signal uh that the future is bright that,there's some projects or something that,that there's a reason to believe uh in,the firm so another thing is you create,a price floor so if the stock is here's,the style and stock is just declining uh,it's just going down and down and then,you know

the content in this video is suitable,for students taking principle of finance,at Humboldt State University in this,video I'm going to explain different,ways to calculate stock return and so,how to do that in Excel in a specific,I'm going to explain how to calculate,holding P return simple and continuously,comparator or it's magic men return,geometric means on an internal rate of,return so let's start with holding P,return holding holding period return,refers to the rate of return and,investment would give if you buy the,stock now or if you had both stocks,sometime back in the past and hold it,for a certain period of time and sell it,usually the holding period return is,calculated as a selling price plus the,total dividend received - purchase price,over purchase price the simple return is,basically the percentage change in the,price so if you know the current price,and if you know the previous price then,you can simply calculate simple return,by finding the difference in the current,price and the previous price and divided,by the previous price like here so if,you want to calculate continuously,compounded return then this is simply,difference in law prices so if you know,that current price and if you know the,past price then you can find the log of,the current price and you can find the,log of the previous price and the,difference in the lock prices this is,like Ln P AR PT which means the current,price minus Ln PT minus 1 where Ln,refers to natural log function then you,get the continuously compounded return,so usually the simple return and,continuously compounded returns are,purely return meaning the rate of return,between one period to another period,could be daily monthly,or weekly or yearly but if you want to,measure the stock return over the,multiple period then we usually use,either arithmetic mean or geometric mean,so they are not very new concept,basically they are coming from the start,class that you have taken listed of,having a simple number we have the,return so arithmetic mean as you know is,sum of all return over number of returns,geometric mean is little bit tricky so,if you know the return series then you,would add one to the return series,multiply all the return series n to the,power 1 over n minus 1 so the formula,itself look little bit complex but Excel,has a Geo mean function so if you use,the Excel zooming function then,calculation of geometric means a lot,easy so I have explained here the steps,to calculate geometric mean first of all,you would find the simple return second,you would find a new city adding one to,the simple return and you can use the,excels zooming functions to calculate,geometric mean and then you minus one so,this is how we calculate geometric mean,in Excel so if you want to calculate the,internal rate of return for the stock,stocks then X IRR function as you have,been familiar with this when we were,talking about the capital budgeting so,here it all the values and then dit so,where values means simply the
